[VIDEO] Watch a C8 Corvette Z06 Cruising Along in Triple Digits for the Silver State Challenge 2023

Ever wanted to speed in your Corvette on public streets legally? That’s where the Silver State Challenge comes in. Every year they shut down a portion of Nevada Highway 318 and allow drivers to feel that need for speed. A member of the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com just participated in the event in his 2023 Corvette Z06 and he shared a really cool PDR video of him cruising along at around 155 mph on the Nevada Highway.

There’s more structure to the event than just showing up and dropping the hammer. The “Sunday Drive” is the main event, and it features a 90-mile course on Highway 318 between Lund and Hiko. There are speed classes ranging from 95 MPH to 180 MPH as well as an unlimited class and the goal is the average closest to your target time over the 90-mile route.

AzDave47 ran in the 150 MPH class for the event and says that his 2023 Corvette Z06 was quite responsive in 6th gear at 5200 RPM for the majority of the course, and he could downshift to 5 when he needed to. There’s a section of the course called the Narrows which is where the road runs through some canyons and that’s where this portion of the video was filmed.

Here is some of the strategy he outlined in his post. Amazingly, he runs the 90-mile course solo and does his own timing using a stopwatch and hand timing at the mile markers:

Cars leave the starting line at 1-minute intervals. While passing is allowed, most competitors use the same strategy, run below you tech speed (165 in the GS div.) until you get your average to the target speed, then run the target speed until after Checkpoint 6, run faster until you “bank” enough time to compensate for running thru the Narrows, and then true up your time after you come out of the Narrows. The entire course, except for the Narrows, can be run at 150 MPH without pushing the car hard in the corners. Drivers are allowed to use the entire road if they wish.

He also takes a moment to tell us his Corvette Z06 is a 2LZ with carbon flash painted low aero, carbon ceramic brakes, and the stock PS4S ZP tires. He had around 3200 miles on the odometer and ran the course in Sport Mode, saying that the ride was much better in the C8Z than in his previous 2009 Z06.

AzDave47 also participated in the one-mile shootout which is a top speed event. From a standing start, his trap speed was 172.525 MPH. You can watch that run here. You can read AzDave47’s full post at the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com.
