[VIDEO] New Plant Director Raymond Theriault Offers Corvette Assembly Plant Update at NCM Anniversary Show

During the National Corvette Museum’s 29th Anniversary Celebration held last week, attendees were able to meet the new plant director Ray Theriault who offered his update on the Corvette Assembly Plant. Ray started off his conversation with the statistic of him being the BGAP’s 10th plant director since GM began operating the facility in 1981.

Ray begins his discussion talking about launching a car in manufacturing, and the steps they take do it right. Ray says the Corvette’s Manufacturing Launch Team is made up of the most experienced personnel and he also calls out the Corvette Plant Operation Launch Manager John Andrews who he says is one the best in the business. John assembled his “launch team” from the various areas of manufacturing at the plant with the one rule being “no rookies.”

Ray then takes us through the eight manufacturing steps, from virtual builds all the way up to the Start of Regular Production. During one of the slides, he shows a quick video of the E-Ray battery being installed into a chassis, and several other videos also show the C8 Corvette Stingray being built on the assembly line for the first time.

Following Ray’s discussion of the manufacturing launch process, he opens the floor to questions:

One question he got was about the UAW negotiations. He says there are actually two contracts with one being the national contract focusing on economics while the second one is the local contract that covers specific issues to each plant. Ray feels they are in good shape with the local contract, but didn’t comment on the national contract.

The plant’s current capacity is 188 cars per day.

The supply chain has greatly improved, but GM is also building way more Corvettes than ever before, so there is a ballet dance that affects all aspects of manufacturing, from ordering the products from suppliers to testing the shipments of those products to the plant.
