One of the vintage Corvettes that’s predicted in some circles to grow in value over the next few years is the C4 ZR-1.

Known affectionately as the “King of the Hill,” the ZR-1 was produced from 1990 to 1995, growing in horsepower from 375 to 405 during its reign that saw a total of 6,922 sold.

The ZR-1, of course, was most noted for its powerful LT5 V8 engine with four overhead cams and 32 valves. The LT5 was a design collaboration between Chevrolet and Lotus, with the actual engines assembled in Oklahoma by Mercury Marine and then shipped to the Bowling Green plant for insertion into the cars.

Besides the engine, though, the ZR-1 also was notable for its widebody design that was notably different from the base Corvette, but only for the 1990 models. In 1991, the base cars also received the same convex rear fascia with four rectangular tail lights, though in a narrower body.

That lack of uniqueness appearance-wise – plus the substantial extra cost of the ZR-1 that started out at $27,016 extra and climbed as high as $31,683 and the fact that the base LT1 engine started producing 300 horsepower beginning with the ’92s – likely contributed to declining interest from enthusiasts.

But that was then. This is now, and examples like this 1991 ZR-1 currently for sale in New York are beginning to attract renewed interest among collectors.

This one – outfitted in black paint with gray leather interior – has been driven only 49,000 miles over the past 32 years and is being offered at the asking price of $26,500.

It includes a new DeWitt aluminum radiator and has Nitto radials, with the seller noting that the car has been kept in a garage and the body is in “great shape.” The interior also looks nice, with only minor wear visible on the seat bolsters from climbing in and out of the car.

The new owner will receive all original records and updated maintenance schedule, and the seller says he won’t negotiate over the phone, only in person so if you’re in the area, you might to check this one out before it’s gone.

No one knows the future, but will enthusiasts eventually be talking about this bargain-priced ZR-1 as the one that got away?
