[VIDEO] 1971 Corvette ZR2 Sells for $785,000 at Mecum Monterey 2023

One of the Corvettes offered during Mecum’s Daytime Auction at Monterey was a very rare 1971 Corvette ZR2. Chevy only built 12 of these specially equipped “Zora Racers” and this one is just one of the two Convertibles offered with the high performance package.

The ZR2 Corvette was powered by the LS6 454/425 ci V8 and mated to the M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission. It also included a transistorized ignition, high-capacity aluminum radiator with shroud delete, heavy duty power disc brakes and the F41 suspension with ZR2-specific springs, shocks, and front/rear sway bars.

This ZR2 was previously part of the Ed Foss collection and it’s the lowest-mileage ZR2 in existence with just 8,796 miles on the odometer. This Brands Hatch Green ZR2 is original and unrestored and comes with plenty of documentation including the tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate, and dealer shipping order. Awards include Bloomington Gold, NCRS Top Flight, MCACN Triple Diamond, and it was part of the Great Hall in 2011.

Presale estimates for the car were $975,000 to $1 million and the auctioneers worked the seller hard as bidding started to slow down. With a phone bidder still standing, the reserve price was lifted at $785,000 and the car was hammered sold. With the buyer’s commission, the total price was $863,500.

  1. Actually surprised with the sale price in the headline, low. Then reading the post, see where the estimated sales price was 100k to 150k higher than the hammer price.
Regardless a true Corvette bit of history, kudos to the new owner for a Corvette well bought!
