Our friend Matt of the RearWheelDrive YouTube channel recently took delivery of a sinister-looking black 2023 Corvette Z06 and it currently has just over 1,400 miles on the odometer. We recently featured the car when Matt visited Cleetus McFarland’s Freedom Factory for a fun day of performance car activities.
Matt came out with a new video over the weekend with his Z06, and unfortunately, it’s about a concern he has with the Z06’s quad center exhaust system. It seems that Matt’s Black Z06 has picked up a peculiar squeaking noise from the exhaust at start-up. Matt is able to capture the sound on video, and you can plainly hear the squeaking noise as he uses the keyfob to perform a remote start.
Matt walks us through the major differences between the Stingray’s corner-mounted exhaust and the one on the Z06, and he believes the squeaking noise is coming from the “continually variable valves” on the Z06 exhaust system, which is different than the bi-valve set up on the Stingray.

It’s not just Matt that is having this issue as he shows his friend’s white Z06 making the same squeaking noise at start up. Matt say his friends’s Z06 started off the same as his, where at first it made just one squeaking noise and now it has progressed to a double squeak on start up.
“I just wanted to make a quick video get this information out there. Hopefully someone from GM can get a hold of this and they can start working on a solution. I don’t know what they’re really gonna do because the valves are actually welded into the exhaust system,” says Matt.
Does your Z06 sound like this on start-up? In the grand scheme of things, it appears to be more of an annoyance than something to be really concerned about, but nobody wants to hear it on a brand new $100K+ sports car. Unfortunately for Matt’s friend, in addition to the exhaust squeaking, he is also dealing with the ticking noise and he tells us that his Z06 has spent most of its ownership at the dealer. We’ve been told that the GM engineer who came to listen to his engine ticking also heard the exhaust valves squeak, so they should at least be aware of the issue.

I wish I had a new ZO6 first of all. Second is he has an awesome car even with a weird squeak. Keep in mind people, all new design which will have bugs. This is kinda funny and annoying especially considering the cost of the car. It’s the first year and that’s what customer feedback is for and the warranty.
That’s messed up!
Doubt GM will do anything if it doesn’t affect the performance or function of the vehicle, good luck getting a new one
Chevy has used buyers of first edition Corvettes as unpaid test drivers for decades — I know from firsthand experience starting in 1962!
I do not have this problem. I picked up my Z06 at the Muesum May 16. I have about 2k miles on it now. No squeaky exhaust valves yet.
