[VIDEO] Classic C3 Corvette Races a WS6 Firebird at the Dragstrip

I came across this very quick video showcasing a classic C3 Corvette drag racing against a Pontiac Firebird with the WS6 performance package.

I don’t know too much about the WS6 Firebirds other than they were powered by the LT1 in the mid-90s before moving to the LS1 V8 engine in 1997 (following the Corvette). As the WS6 was a package, it included the distinct Ram Air intake and hood, and the WS6 cars also received a beefier suspension, five spoke wheels, and a few more changes. As for the Corvette, we can tell it’s a pre-77 model as it’s missing the large coupe rear window, and we’re assuming the reason why the rear wheels are different from the fronts is because the Corvette is wearing drag radials.

So when I see this aggressive-looking Firebird lining up against a C3, my first inclination is to believe the C3 bit off more than he can chew. But that was far from the case as the C3’s driver got an excellent launch and was able to jump out and hold off this Firebird from taking the win. The C3 ran the quarter mile in 11.31 seconds which is very fast for its age, but only managed a trap speed of 83.53 mph which I am still trying to fathom. The WS6 finished just behind at 11:56, and its trap speed was 121.03 mph.
