NASCAR’s Street Race in downtown Chicago may have been halted by a storm Saturday, but the delay didn’t stop a Corvette driver from rolling onto the course a few hours later.

Police have now charged the 46-year-old intruder with negligent driving, lack of a valid registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The driver ran his yellow C8 Corvette through a barrier on the 1200 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive and onto the course around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

The Corvette was reported on the course near Michigan Avenue and Balboa Drive at. 9 p.m. and received a police escort off the course about 9:30 p.m.

The Corvette featured flame detailing with decals apparently referring to 93 Boyz, a Chicago-based cannabis brand founded by rapper Vic Mensa.

No injuries were reported, police said, but the same can’t be said for the race. Because the inclement weather continued into Sunday, officials eventually decided to cancel the rest of the race and name Cole Custer as the winner. He had been in the lead after 29 of the race’s 55 laps had been run Saturday when action had to be stopped.

Officials had originally planned to resume the race at 10 a.m. today but cited “unprecedented circumstances” around 12:30 p.m. in ending the race and declaring Custer the winner.

“With standing water and flooding a significant issue at the racetrack and throughout the city, there was no option to return to racing prior to shifting to NASCAR Cup Series race operations,” according to a statement from NASCAR.

  1. More power to the C8 driver for having the balls to do it! Let’s hear it for the Ringer from New Zealand who showed the NASCAR boys how it’s done on a street course!

  2. Not a big deal. That place is a shit hole anyway. The rest of the country is in the 80’s-100’s range and this place gets rained out.
