[VIDEO] C8 Corvette Stingray Stretches its Legs on the German Autobahn

One of the drawbacks to having a high-performance vehicle like a new mid-engine Corvette is the inability to stretch the legs of the 495-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine.

That problem is alleviated on speed-unrestricted sections of the German Autobahn, where there is an advisory speed limit of 130 km/h or 81 mph. But driving faster than that is not actually illegal but can open up the driver to increased liability in the event of a collision.

While we Americans have to be content to exercise our Corvettes on tracks, the driver of this Rapid Blue C8 Corvette Stingray was free to hit as high of a speed as he wanted, of course depending on the traffic in front of and around him.

This six-minute video posted by TopSpeed on YouTube begins with the Corvette in a parking lot and then moving onto the entry ramp, where the driver stops and uses launch control to merge with traffic. He eventually hits stretches where he’s able to climb as high as 266 km/h. That’s a whopping 165 mph for us Americans who haven’t yet mastered the metric system.

Later in the video, he gets off the Autobahn and takes the Stingray onto some curvy sections of roads, a nice example of its cornering ability as well as the intelligence of the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that downshifts from sixth to third gear in the blink of an eye without affecting the balance of the car.

It’s not the most exciting video you’ll watch – we wish the driver had made some comments while on the Autobahn – but having the speedometer in the corner of the video allows instant notification of the Corvette’s speed.

Too bad there was so much traffic that he couldn’t exceed 165 mph since the Corvette is capable of much more than that!

  1. Not illegal, but not safe to be going that much faster than the other cars around you. Time to react to another driver doing something unexpected (which happens all too often) is virtually non-existent!

  2. Yeah running 165 in traffic isn’t a smart thing to do. If he runs up on somebody who isn’t paying attention and all of a sudden changes lanes up ahead of him, they both would be dead when they collide and their cars literally explode.

  3. I can’t say what it is like on the German autobahn but I was at an event in 2009 where the local and state police had closed off a 20 mile section of a highway and waited for the public to clear. Once the highway was clear they let the corvettes go. I hit 180 mph but only recorded 170mph. It was both thrilling and scary because American roads are not made for that type of speed. I was driving my stock 2009 C6 and recorded most of the run. What a rush.
