Can you really build a $5,900 C6 Corvette convertible?

If you’re a fan of crazy guy Shawn Pilot’s YouTube channel, you’re probably a lot more optimistic than most folks that combining parts from two crippled C6s into one nice car is very possible.

In his latest post, the first of a series, Shawn tells us he has bought a one-owner, low-mileage 2009 Corvette convertible for just $4,200! What a deal, we think.

Unfortunately, as the camera pans back, we see that the car has been hit hard – very hard – right behind the driver’s side door, damaging the fuel tank, driver’s seat, and door. Hence, its bargain price when a similar car in top condition would retail for about $25,000.

But don’t fret. Shawn always seems to find bargain cars under every rock, and today is no exception as he has located a 2008 convertible a half hour away that’s a theft recovery and is missing a lot of parts but has never been in an accident. Best of all, the seller is asking just $2,000 for it, though he quickly comes down to $1,700 after just a little bit of dickering with Shawn.

That means he has a total of only $5,900 invested in his “two ugly ducklings,” as Shawn calls his twins.

Using a makeshift plastic gas tank secured to the fender of the wrecked ‘Vetter, he quickly tests the 2009’s mechanicals and discovers they still work perfectly, including the engine, transmission, torque tube, brakes, etc. So naturally he takes a test drive around the block and is all smiles when he returns – the only problem being a pesky warning light noting that his door is ajar, not surprising since it’s totally missing!

Next up in the series, Shawn will attempt to install the wiring harness from the wrecked donor car and then proceed with the rest of the repairs. We’ll keep you posted!

  1. Its refreshing to see guys doing things like this as opposed to sending the car to the crusher or just parting it out, I would definitely do exactly what Shawn is doing. It’s so easy to just write a check and have someone else do it but that gives no satisfaction and appreciation for what you wind up with. Yes some people are unable to do things like this and that is a shame.

  2. This dude is a down to earth true Corvette Guy. His videos are actually enjoyable to watch unlike those by the spoiled princess and those two annoying buttheads Stradman and Street Speed 717.

  3. Seems like a huge waste of time, just go buy a nice one and enjoy it. I have never had to rebuild any of my Corvette’s to appreciate any of them, I just get in and drive. Does it every time. Ya I’m also happy the high maintenance spoiled brat is not here. Can’t stand that broad. This guy must have a lot of time on his hands.
