[VIDEO] Surprising Mom and Dad with a 1967 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible

Get ready to take out the hankies after watching this heartwarming Corvette story that traces its origins back nearly 60 years!

In 1965, a youthful J.R. walked into his Chevy dealership and bought a brand new red-on-red Sting Ray convertible off the showroom floor.

That Corvette was his love and his baby, at least until he met an even more beautiful girl named Alice and they got married. A couple of years later, the first of three children, a boy named Chad, arrived, followed by his brother Brent 11 months later and their sister Kara a couple of years after that.

Now, over the years, we’ve heard about couples being able to fit a couple of kids in their Sting Ray coupe, but there was just no way to transport three kids in a convertible. Therefore, J.R. and Alice had to take drastic measures and buy a family car, a faded blue 1962 four-door Mercury Comet.

“For 50 years Dad has reminisced of that long-long Corvette and has lovingly teased me as the reason he had to sell her,” Brent says in a YouTube video posted recently. “We have joked about it for decades. My entire adult life I have dreamed about one day being able to pay it forward. I searched for years and finally found the perfect car!”

The kids and their spouses concocted a scheme to present that Corvette on their Mom’s 80th birthday, gathering at Brent’s house before dinner.

“I had the car parked in the neighbor’s driveway,” Brent explains. “Upon arrival, everyone was intrigued to go check it out. I explained I had just spoken to my neighbor and mentioned that my parents had one identical to it back in the day and would he mind if I let my parents sit in the car for old time’s sake? The rest is history!”

The video then cuts to a shot of Mom and Dad sitting in the car.

“Mom, you had two kids sitting in your lap in this thing,” Brent says. “It was y’all’s daily driver, right, your only car for a while?”

Spontaneously, Dad puts his arm around Mom and both erupt into big smiles, no doubt remembering those happy days more than half a century ago.

That’s when Brent opens up the glove compartment and pulls out a sheet of paper and asks his Mom to read it out loud.

The paper tells all about the 1967 L79 Corvette, complete with numbers-matching drivetrain with 327/350 horsepower engine and four-speed manual transmission, factory Rally Red exterior with red interior and white soft top, total frame-off rotisserie restoration, and last but not least … owners J.R. and Alice!

Mom screams out when she realizes what’s happening and hands the paper to her husband. He has a puzzled look on his face, saying “I did not have a ’67. What?!? What are you saying? This is our car? Oh no way!”

Dad holds his hands up into the air and screams “Hallelujah! I’m in heaven and didn’t even know I died! Hallelujah! Are you kidding me? Oh my goodness! Oh, this is unbelievable!”

“You’re gonna have to figure out how to get in and out a little better,” one of the kids laughs.

“I’ll figure it out,” Dad says. “I’ll go to therapy! Therapy, here I come!”

As Mom starts to cry, Dad again says, “Oh my goodness. I’m not believing this,” as he throws his hands into the air once more and kisses his wife again.

“Alice, I’m gonna teach you how to drive this thing,” he says.

“First, teach her how to get out,” someone jokes.

Brent reaches in and takes a sign off the dash, explaining “it’s not really for sale now!”

“Ready to go for a drive?” he asks.

“Not right now,” J.R. answers. “I’m too nervous, too excited.”

But he is OK with cranking up the car and letting everyone listen to the sweet rumblings of those side pipes.

Best wishes from CorvetteBlogger to the happy couple for many wonderful trips in their “Little Red Corvette.”

  1. If I was him I would have had to get a big bucket to cry in just knowing that I had to dump my beloved Corvette for a faded out Mercury Comet. Congratulations to them. Their Corvette looks and sounds awesome.

  2. ‘What a great story! I would love to have another C2… ‘had a new ’66 all-silver convertible…
… and I’ll never forget it.

  3. Just as good as the C7 commercial featuring a daughter giving her dad a new car replacing the he sold years before to pay for her college.

  4. Great story. I have had a 66′, 68′, 72′, 87′ and now have an 05′. The 72′ had to go for the same reason as befell J.R. and Alice. It was followed by a long family induced Corvette drought until 1987.
