Corvettes for Sale: 3,200-Mile 1996 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe

A lot of us long-time enthusiasts were slow to show up for the “black wheel” party. I must admit growing up in the ’60s and ’70s, black wheels were reserved for the “bargain basement” cars like the Biscayne so I thought they made a car look cheap, unlike the much fancier chrome wheels of the day.

The car that slowly began to change my mind about black wheels, though, arrived with the 1996 Corvette Grand Sport. With its patriotic paint scheme of Admirable Blue, white full-length body stripe, and red hash marks on the left front fender, accented by black five-spoke wheels, I was finally ready to stand tall and salute the “black wheel” flag for the first time. Since then I’ve had black wheels on a 2015 convertible and my current ’23 Stingray.

(Aside: Could 1996 possibly be the debut of the black wheel for any Corvette? What do you think?)

If you want one of these American beauties, you have to stand in line. Only 810 Grand Sport coupes and 190 convertibles were produced by Chevy in 1996, but now one of the coupes is up for sale on Bring a Trailer.

With five days left in the auction, the high bid is already $35,000.

The only things that could have made us salivate any more about this Grand Sport would be if it was a convertible with the ultra-rare red interior. This one has the more popular black leather seats, but it’s still quite impressive-looking.

Not surprising, since the owners have been very picky with this car ever since it was first delivered to Pape Chevrolet in Huntington Station, New York. The current owner bought it from the original owner in February 2022 with 3,200 miles, and he’s added just five more since then.

Those two owners have been rewarded with knowing they have been caretakers of an award-winning Corvette, one that most recently earned a 2022 NCRS Regional Top Flight award.

The last year of the fourth generation, the ’96 Grand Sport was upgraded with a special LT4 V8 engine that rocked out 330 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque while hooked to a six-speed manual transmission.

  1. The 96 Grand Sport was the first Corvette with black wheels. The Grand Sport Coupe is my very favorite C4 Corvette hands down.
