Corvettes for Sale: Rare Gold 1987 Corvette Offered at No Reserve on BaT

This 1987 Corvette coupe’s “tour of duty” with its original owner is finally about to come to an end after a remarkable stretch of 36 years.

The car – now like new inside and out, fresh off a refurbishment undertaken over the past few years – is being offered on Bring a Trailer at no reserve. The current high bid is $10,000, with the auction closing in four days.

As the owner of new 1986 and 1989 coupes back in the day, I can attest to the fact that despite the horsepower disadvantage these early C4s have against today’s super-versions, they were just as much fun to drive. With their spaceship digital dashes and clamshell hoods that offered great access to the 240-horsepower engine, they were just as exotic as the current mid-engine versions, in their own way.

The only owner of this Corvette so far ordered it through the Military Personnel Sales Program while serving his country in Germany, taking delivery overseas at Mannheim before eventually having it shipped to the United States.

With 96,000 miles showing on the odometer all these years later, the car now wears a fresh coat of Gold Metallic paint after first having damage to the right-rear quarter panel repaired about 24,000 miles ago, then subsequently having the entire body stripped, primed, sanded and repainted with new weather seals and badging.

In March 2022, new General G-Max RS tires were installed, with bright-finished 16-inch alloy wheels inside them. Other mechanical updates within the last 9,000 miles include replacement of the brake booster, master cylinder, and brake pads, along with installation of front slotted and drilled brake rotors. The air conditioning system was also recharged.

This Corvette also was ordered with the Z52 Sport Handling Package with 13:1-ratio steering rack, additional chassis bracing, and Bilstein shocks (now replaced by KYB units).

The interior looks brand new in the extensive set of photos with the listing, and well it should, having been updated about 16,000 miles ago, with the door panels, center console lid, and door sills refinished and the carpet, floor mats, seat cushions, sun visors, headliner, and seat upholstery all replaced. A Bluetooth-capable Alpine sound system has also been installed, including Boston Acoustics and Pioneer speakers.

It sounds like the new owner next week will be getting a virtually brand-new 1987 Corvette, but likely much cheaper than the delivered price of $28,586.12 paid by the original owner way back in the summer of 1987.

  1. I used to own an 84 then an 85 and lastly an 89 back in the day when that first body style C4 was the current design. I agree they were a blast to drive back then but they all really pale a lot in comparison to modern Corvettes.
