[VIDEO] Speed Phenom Takes a Ride in the 2023 Corvette Z06 at Laguna Seca


Speed Phenom was out at Laguna Seca for Monterey Car Week as a guest of Chevrolet who has its new supercar at the famous track. There are actually two Z06s at the track. We see the Rapid Blue Z06/Z07 Coupe that Jordan Taylor was driving last week at Road America, as well as the 70th Anniversary IndyCar Z06 Pace Car with its special Edge Red engine manifolds.

Speed gives us a great look at both cars, which at the time of filming were being fitted with new Cup 2R Michelin tires. After the walk-around, we have a “professional Chevy driver” in the car demonstrating the difference in the exhaust sounds when it’s put into stealth mode.

Before Speed Phenom’s ride in the Z06, there is a warm-up lap provided by that pro driver who turns out to be none other than Corvette Hall of Famer Ron Fellows! The hot lap is captured in POV and it’s one of the first times we’ve seen the Z06 really driven that angry. It’s a spectacular ride! Speed then jumps into the passenger seat, and they go out again for another two laps!

Those two laps are fun to watch, and I had the sound turned up for maximum effect. The new sports car appears to be quick as we watched the track mode speedometer, braking looked strong, and the couple of times that the car twitched, there was an instant correction. At one point (11:31) on the second lap, Ron missed the shift by going up to 6th, and you hear him chuckle about it. But good to see the Corvette Racing ambassador and namesake of his performance driving school doing his thing. I also have it on good authority that the second driver was head instructor Rick Malone, so these passengers definitely got the full show even if the disclaimer said these there demonstration rides…too bad they can’t yet talk about it.

  2. What an incredible world class performance super car sports car the C8 Z06 is! That 5.5L 32 valve DOHC flat plane crank V8 really screams. Too bad it only comes with that lame ass auto transmission. I would love to see that car with a manual trans in it. Chevy also needs to drop the price somewhat as it is over priced. They are approaching porsche prices. But, what a car!

  3. Hmm…at 11:40 does the DTC have a mid of it’s own? Or was the driver up-shifting instead of down-shifting.

  4. BobMan – Me thinks from the Austin giggles that the shifting was not done by the DCT but by “someone” misplacing his fingers in manual mode. But that’s just me. 🤔🤦

  5. Ron Fellows is my home country Hero & Legend. He purposely lined up the curve chords to graze but not touch the curve ribs… He also Had a wide grin. @ BobMan Ron Raced with Manual sequential sticks on C6R… Cudos to Speed Phenom for the respect he showed..
