At a time when new-vehicle problems overall have hit an all-time high, the mid-engine Corvette is bucking the trend.

In fact, Corvette ranked first in the Premium Sporty Car category of the just-released 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. Despite being changed to an entirely new mid-engine format in 2020, the 2022 Corvette was the most problem-free model overall with a PP100 score of 101.

That’s very impressive considering the average PP100 score for 2022 was 180 and the most problems ever were reported in the 36-year history of the survey. That average score in 2022 was up 11 percent over the 162 a year earlier.

To determine the PP100 score, J.D. Power surveyed 84,500 owners and lessees of new model-year 2022 vehicles, asking them 223 questions in nine categories: infotainment; features, controls and displays; exterior; driving assistance; interior; powertrain; seats; driving experience; and climate.

The Stingray’s success is actually a reflection of the entire Chevrolet brand, which ranked third overall with a score of 147 behind Buick’s 139 and Dodge’s 143 and far ahead of luxury models like Lexus at 157 and Mercedes-Benz at 189.

The Corvette wasn’t the only winner for Chevrolet as five other Bowtie models finished first in their respective categories, including Equinox, Malibu, Silverado 1500, Silverado heavy-duty pickup trucks, and Tahoe.

Interestingly, the survey reports, on average, that owners of all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids experience more problems than internal-combustion-engine vehicle owners. Tesla wasn’t included in the rankings because it doesn’t allow J.D. Power to access owner information in some states but Elon Musk’s brand did earn a PP100 score of 226.
