Corvettes for Sale: 1965 Corvette Grand Sport Replica Offered on Bring a Trailer

This Corvette started life as a normal 1965 coupe. Since the 1980s, however, its life has been anything but normal.

That’s when Midwest Corvette Specialties of Spring, Texas decided to transform the car in the style of the original 1963 Corvette Grand Sports that had been built under the watchful eye of Zora Arkus-Duntov who hoped to put an end to the racing domination of Carroll Shelby and his Cobras. General Motors brass wound up putting an end to Zora’s plans, however, but not before five of the Grand Sports were produced.

This car pays homage to those original Grand Sports, but goes even further. The body kit consists of a one-piece front clip with vented fenders, a one-piece rear clip with vents, new hood, trunk lid, Plexiglas rear window, custom grille, complete door skins, headlight covers, fender flare extensions, chrome mirrors, a flip-up gas cap, and a replacement dash.

Under the hood is a small block 350/425 horsepower V8 engine manufactured by Racing Head Services of Memphis, Tennessee with 9:1 pistons, comp cam, 2.02 heads, Hedman Headers, and side pipes.

The interior includes 1985 Corvette Lear-Seigler leather sport seats with fully adjustable air-powered lumbar supports and side bolsters, with the driver’s seat featuring six-way electrical adjustments. A semi-functional roll bar has been installed, keeping with the racing image of the original Grand Sports. The dash is a replica of the original Grand Sport dash but updated with Autometer gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, and battery voltage.

Other features include power steering, Vintage Air climate control, lap belts, and 15-inch American Racing wheels with three-eared spinner caps inside Diamond Black Classics redline tires.

The current owners, a couple living in North Georgia, bought the car in 2013 and began a 2½-year restoration, including paint and body work by Derrick Smith of Smith Paint and Restoration in Cartersville, Georgia. The engine and M21 Muncie four-speed manual transmission were also rebuilt.

The car is painted with 15 coats of 1986 Corvette Red lacquer paint and six coats of clear lacquer, with a black competition-style stripe running the full length of the car, with black anodized OEM side pipes and covers.

This one-of-a-kind Corvette is now being offered on Bring a Trailer, where the current bid has climbed to $40,000 with five days to go.
