Persistence paid off for the guy who pined after this 1964 Corvette Sting Ray convertible.

He had been trying to buy the car for the past 10 years, but the owner wouldn’t sell it – despite the fact that it had been sitting in storage since 1980.

Sadly, the owner’s health took a turn for the worse and he wound up in a nursing home. That’s when his family decided to finally sell the Corvette that had been in his possession since 1969.

The new owner pulled it out of the storage building – shown in a photo as it was that day, but after getting the vehicle running, he’s decided to sell the car on eBay, where it’s already attracted 42 bids rising to a high of $40,009 with four days left in the no-reserve auction.

Since being yanked out of storage, the car has seen a lot of mechanical work, with the owner doing a tune-up, cleaning the gas tank, and installing a new master cylinder, radiator, alternator, battery, and convertible top, along with a “newer” set of tires. After all that effort, “the car started right up,” he said.

Now, this classic C2 “runs and drives nice and smooth,” the seller says, adding that it seems to be a “very clean, solid car” with a “perfect” frame and a “very straight no hit body.”

This Sting Ray copies the always popular color scheme of the original 1953 Corvettes, with a white exterior that’s been repainted once over a “very nice and original” red interior.

The car has been driven just 40,000 miles over the past 58 years and will arrive at its new home heavily optioned, with power steering / windows/ brakes and air conditioning.

Most of the gauges still work, the seller says, along with the power windows, horn, and headlights, though he admits “like any car that is 58 years old, not everything…works.”

All in all, he believes this ’64 Corvette would be a “very nice car to add to any collection.”

  1. Why after 10 years of trying to buy it and then finally buying it when the owner wound up in a nursing home did he recommission the car and then sell it ? Is the car keeping a secret he discovered ? Inquiring minds want to know !

  2. Craig my question exactly he discovered it costs as much to get a 64 low horsepower car running as a 66 big block. The dying old man makes the story better.
