It was almost a year ago that Chevrolet introduced the first special edition for the C8 Corvette era with the launch of the 2022 Corvette IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Edition at Belle Isle in Detroit. With Corvette Racing participating at the IMSA racing event that weekend, drivers Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia were tapped to drive the special editions across Belle Isle’s MacArthur Bridge where they were introduced to the public on the start/finish line of the Belle Isle Grand Prix.

The C8.R edition was a celebration of Corvette Racing’s inaugural racing season with the C8.R race car where it swept IMSA’s sports car championship series, taking the Manufacturers, Drivers, and Team titles. The racing team captured six victories and seven pole positions and set the fastest class laps in six events. Proving that the first year wasn’t a fluke, the team came back in 2021 and did it again, talking all three championships.

The IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Editions were limited to 1,000 examples and customers could order one in four different configurations. Buyers could choose between the No.3 Accelerate Yellow versions as a Coupe or Convertible, or they could opt for the No.4 livery in Hypersonic Gray with a choice of body style as well. The only requirements were the cars needed to be 3LTs and have the Z51 Performance Package.

The IMSA C8.R edition added $6,595 to the price of the car. Further options included the reversed body-color stripes and a C8.R graphic behind the side intakes. Carbon Flash high wings provided a race-inspired look while also being outfitted in Black Trident Wheels, yellow brake calipers, and carbon flash outside mirrors. The interior featured the Strike Yellow/Sky Cool Gray GT2 seats (upgradable to competition seats) and the interior plaque showed off the sequence number of the car.

At the NCM Bash at the National Corvette Museum, Corvette product manager Harlan Charles broke down the production figures for the 2022 IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Editions. The official stats show that Convertibles outsold Coupes by 53% to 47% and two out of three were produced with the No. 4 Hypersonic Gray livery by a margin of 66% to 34%.

The IMSA GTLM Championship C8.R Editions were offered initially in just the USA and Canada, however, later in the production cycle, we caught the news that Chevy allocated up to 12 of the C8.R editions to Mexico.

  1. My only question is why wasn’t the yellow version offered in C8.R #3 Yellow, instead of in Accelerate Yellow? If it had been, I suspect the number of C8.R Editions ordered in yellow would have been much higher, maybe even more than in Hypersonic Gray.

  2. Thanks for the numbers breakdown. Enjoying #902, Accelerate Yellow HTC with pretty much all the good stuff. My understanding is the build was in early December just before the tornado in Kentucky. Delivered to MN just in time for a late Christmas. Would like to know where it was on December 12th. Thanks to Matt Saxe Chevrolet for offering this car. Wasn’t in the plans considering I called them just to see if a new order would really take 18 + months.
