Corvettes for Sale: NCRS Award-Winning 1981 Corvette on Bring a Trailer

This award-winning 1981 Corvette is about as nice an original example as you’ll ever find.

It’s currently being offered on Bring a Trailer, where interest has already been intense, driving the high bid to $31,000 so far. Perhaps some of our readers can remember seeing a higher offer for an ’81, but this writer hasn’t – I was thrilled to get $11,000 for what I thought was a fairly nice ’81 five years ago! And the final number for this car is likely to go much higher, since there are still five days left in the auction.

In 2011, this Maroon Metallic over camel leather Corvette earned the NCRS’s highest award for unrestored Corvettes, the NCRS-Chevrolet Bowtie Award, during a presentation at the 2011 National Convention in Novi, Michigan.

Originally purchased from Sunrise Chevrolet in Ohio, multiple owners have taken over the stewardship of this Corvette, which has traveled only 8,464.9 miles over the past 41 years, including just 1,250 miles since 2006.

It features an L81 350 V8 engine (190 horsepower with 280 lb-ft of torque) hooked to a three-speed automatic transmission, along with glass T-top panels, 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, pop-up headlights, and the original Delco AM/FM/eight-track stereo.

The interior remains virtually flawless, while the exterior paint has a few blemishes acquired over four decades though nothing worthy of a repaint. As the NCRS judges voted in 2011, “the car should be preserved in its present state.”

We wouldn’t argue with that suggestion, as this car – which not surprisingly has a clean Carfax – is a virtual rolling time capsule. The new caretaker will receive the NCRS judging documents from 2011, manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, a car cover, and multiple keys.

About the only thing we’d change on this car would be the color (to red, silver, or white), but the color combo of this one (maroon over saddle) offers a nice contrast appealing to our eyes. What about you?
