There’s nothing quite like the driving experience of a 1970-72 LT1 Corvette.
Having owned an orange ’71 LT1 for about a year, I can attest to the “fun factor” of the car. Unfortunately, the ’70 and ’71 LT1 didn’t come equipped with air conditioning, and in the hot Georgia summer, I quickly discovered that Astro-Ventilation just didn’t cut it so I traded it for a more comfortable – and cooler, at least temperature-wise – ’05 convertible.
The new owner of this unrestored white ’72 coupe currently being offered on eBay for $68,000 won’t have that problem, however.
According to Mike Antonick’s “Corvette Black Book,” Chevy finally offered air conditioning on the LT1 in 1972, and this Corvette is one of just 240 produced with that $464.50 option.
My orange LT1 was in excellent condition, but unfortunately, I was only able to trace the car back to the previous two owners so I didn’t have the always desirable documentation that would have pushed it over the top.
Again, no such problem with this matching-numbers car as it’s said to be fully documented, with extensive owner history and just 61,000 original miles.
Furthermore, along with the aforementioned AC, it’s highly optioned with power steering/brakes/windows, factory stereo radio, and deluxe black leather interior with woodgrain on the console and door panels.
This chrome-bumper Stingray is described as being “unrestored” by the seller, though he does point out it has had “one high-end repaint.”
LT1s have long been touted as highly collectible C3s with a lot of potential for growth – one reason we bought one in the first place more than a decade ago, and we’re wondering if the current hot market will allow this owner to get his asking price.

Mitch, I owned a ’71 Ontario Orange LT-1 Convertible, Black std. Interior, black folding top. It had American Racing Wheels 200S on it when I sold it to a guy that lived in Rockland County N.Y. as I did. His name was Richard Kiely. The VIN # was 194671S101719. I bought it new in November of 1970 from Reedman Auto Sales in Langhorn Pa. The window sticker showed it being ordered by Ramp Chevrolet in Port Jefferson N.Y. I bought a hardtop for it. It had a Lakewood Scattershield, I also put an Amber Reverse light (from my ’69 Road Runner) on the dashboard just to the right of the tach. Richard was buying the car for his wife so I had to change the clutch in it from a Hays to a G.M. replacement and also I had to take the ’69 side exhaust off and put back on the standard factory system
They have no horsepower.
@Paul: In 1971 two points less compression only cost about 11% hp from 370 in 1970, doubt you could feel the difference, plus gas would not be a problem all the way down to 91 octane. 1972 was the same engine, just a different standard for rating hp.
