Corvettes for Sale: 1984 Corvette Barn Find Offered on Craigslist for $2,850

To the young Corvette enthusiasts just now joining the fun because of the new mid-engine Stingray, the ’84 model may not seem like much.

But to the older folks out there like this writer, the 1984 represented a huge step forward for the model over the long-running third generation and in many ways was just as enticing as the C8 is nowadays to a new crop of car lovers.

The ’84 proved to be a huge hit with customers, with a whopping 51,547 coupes produced over an extended model year.

Today, the ’84 represents an opportunity to get into the Corvette hobby with the smallest investment. Take this black barn find, currently being offered on Craigslist out of the Des Moines, Iowa area for the asking price of $2,850.

The seller admits it won’t start, needs tires, and has a cracked dash pad.

“Not a show car,” he says candidly, “but is all there and complete.”

That includes the cross-fire fuel-injected 350 V8 engine hooked to an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, it also includes what this writer feels are some of the ugliest wheels ever to grace a Corvette.

Any new owner needs to look past the current condition and appreciate the potential of this car. Imagine this car with a set of new wheels, a new paint job, maybe some front and rear spoilers, a new more powerful crate engine, and interior work including new carpet and seat covers, and you’d have a very impressive sports car that at the time was hailed by the motoring press as the world’s best cornering vehicle. We always loved the tilting clamshell hood that made the car very exotic-looking, along with the new one-piece removable roof panel. No more fooling with twin T-tops! Woo hoo!

Unfortunately, while I get excited remembering the days when I was just a pup and bought new red ’86 and ’89 coupes and dream about what could be done with this particular car, the truth is that it would cost a lot of money to bring it back to glory and the resale market likely wouldn’t reward you for all that effort.

Still, there’s no ignoring it’s a Corvette and played just as important a role in the history of the model as much more heralded cars that came before and after it. What do you think?

  1. Hard to tell the true condition. Does it crank but not start–or no crank? Will it start with a jumper? But it seems to be mainly unmolested–with the exception of the shifter. And if it was stored inside away from moisture–it may be in better condition than it appears. Offer 2k and he would probably take it. I do know that it would make a good first car for a 16 year old. I would have loved to have had a first car like that. And I love the factory wheels on that C4.

  2. Too bad the seller couldn’t even wash it before he took the photos. Not everyone is hung up on this so-called recent “barn find” BS.

  3. You would be surprised what a little elbow grease would do for that car how to wash the hell out of it and then put it up for sale you could’ve got another five grand

  4. Probably needs a little bit of TLC. I bet it wouldn’t take much to get it running. Then just drive it the way it is. It’s an icon and I wouldn’t modify it. Just enjoy it for what it is.
