Corvettes for Sale: 1980 Corvette Barn Find Parked in 1991

1980 Corvettes have always had a soft spot in my heart because my first Corvette was a red-on-red ’80.

That’s why I’m hoping someone will accept the challenge of restoring this 1980 Corvette – perhaps one of the 2,077 originally painted that color – that’s been parked on concrete since 1991.

The seller’s father bought the car many years ago out of Minnesota when he was running a Corvette restoration business and had plans to be the one to accept that challenge himself. But his dad passed away in 1991 without getting the car done, and it was driven to its current location in the Midwest, where it’s been parked ever since, gathering a thick coating of dirt and grime in the meantime.

When we read the Craigslist ad offering the car for $8,000, we were a little shocked at that price, considering how bad it looks on the outside. Then we saw a photo of the two-tone Oyster cloth interior that still looks virtually new, and we began to think there is hope for this car after all!

It would be interesting to see this Corvette get a good wash job and see how the paint managed to hold up under all that dirt, especially since the seller maintains it didn’t have any history of being wrecked when his dad bought it. The engine bay is also a real mess, but we wonder if it, too, would clean up nicely with just a little elbow grease.

When his dad bought it, the car apparently was in pretty decent shape, with what is believed to be just a genuine 47,000 miles on the odometer.

Now, though, as he tries to settle the estate, the seller is seeking what he calls “a qualified party” who will be able to carry on his father’s mission and restore the car to its proper order. That party should expect a lot of work to get it back on the road, he points out, including new tires, rebuilt carburetor, clean gas tank, “and much more.”

However, considering the rarity of the yellow paint (second lowest output behind the 844 in Dark Green) and the unusual interior, this car might be worth taking a chance on, especially since these C3s have started climbing in value over the past few years.

We always liked the look of the front and rear ends on the ’80-82 models, with their integrated front and rear spoilers that really made the car look much more aggressive, in our opinion.

What about you? Would you take on this challenge?
