Corvettes for Sale: 1966 Corvette 427 Convertible with Racing History Offered on Bring A Trailer

This 1966 Corvette convertible up for auction on Bring a Trailer has an extensive racing history that began more than 50 years ago.

The second owners of the car, who eventually kept it for 45 years, modified it for racing in 1968 and then took part in about 200 autocross and SCCA events from 1968 to 1973.

Interestingly, proof of that racing heritage remains in place today with plaques from various autocross and track events still affixed to the center stack, glovebox, and passenger door panel.

More importantly, however, the original matching-numbers 427 V8 engine – later fitted in 1985 with aluminum L88-style cylinder heads and ARP studs – remains under the hood.

During a 2013 rebuild by LJ Corvette Motorworks of Napa, California, engine work included magnafluxing the crankshaft and connecting rods and installing forged pistons, resurfaced cylinder heads, and ARP head studs along with a replacement starter, fuel pump, rocker arms, and push rods.

The list of equipment also includes a four-speed manual transmission, a roll bar, a Delco AM/FM radio, six taillights, side exhaust pipes, four-wheel disc brakes, and knock-off turbine-style wheels.

Purchased new from Harry Mann Chevrolet in Los Angeles, the car started life coated in Mossport Green paint (982 code) but was resprayed in the late 1960s in a darker shade of green with a light green center stripe at which time the wheel openings were cut to allow for wider wheels and tires.

The car is not perfect, with bubbling around the fuel filler, fiberglass cracks, hazing on the soft top window, rock chips, tears in the soft top, and seam separation in the passenger seat bottom in the black vinyl interior among the imperfections noted.

The selling dealer, located in New Hampshire, has owned the car for about four years and says the sale will include service records and a clean Montana title.

With five days left in the bidding, the high offer so far is $40,000.
