Ever since the 2020 Corvette Convertible made its debut at the Kennedy Space Center, I haven’t been able to get the car out of my mind. Never before has a new Corvette had this effect on me. And then it hit me…
I’ve got Corvette fever!
It’s been somewhat easy to turn away the seductive charms of the 2020 Corvette Stingray Coupes. I got a kid in college and another headed that way so there was no way that I saw a new mid-engine Corvette sitting in my garage anytime soon. And it’s still not an option, but now I feel like I’m missing all the fun!
Man oh man do I love that new convertible.
I started off with a black Stingray in the Corvette Visualizer but quickly switched to Ceramic Matrix Gray so that I could see the roof and nacelles in Carbon Flash. Not stopping there, I went ahead with the Z51 package and blacked out the wing and side mirrors to match.
And that’s just one of the ways that I would like to have it.
There are no trade-offs for choosing the 2020 Stingray Convertible as there used to be. While the coupe does offer a nice view of the C8 engine, I really like the option of being able to drop that rear window whether the hardtop is up or down. And when the top is down, it opens up the whole cabin to provide the open-air driving experience that convertible Corvettes are known for.
No storage space is lost when you have the top down in the Convertible. And unlike the Coupe, you don’t have to give up any of your rear storage space to store the Targa top.
The convertible’s top can be operated at speeds of up to 30 mph. Harlan Charles likes to say that because Corvette owners are always in a hurry, you can raise or lower the top from the key-fob before ever getting in the car.
Nacelles wasn’t even a word in my lexicon just a week ago. Now it’s my favorite word when describing the new Corvette convertible! They offer that exotic design for the mid-engine and they look great with the top up or down. And of course, you can customize them three ways to Sunday to boot.
According to Chevy, the convertible roof system design, combined with the same rear spoiler used on the Stingray coupe’s Z51 Performance Package, results in identical drag between the coupe and convertible with the top up. Corvette’s engineers also tweaked the chassis with springs and dampers tuned specifically to provide the same performance as the Coupe.
Exotic looks and no compromises makes the 2020 Stingray Convertible the C8 Corvette for us. And while I still will be unable to order a new C8 Corvette this year, I can dream of the day it will happen.
Oh yes, this car will be mine!
