Whipped by gusty winds, a routine fence fire quickly grew into a blaze that damaged two homes in Tracy, California on Monday afternoon – in the process consuming a 2016 Corvette inside one garage.

“Any fire we have on a windy day has an added dimension,” Battalion Fire Chief Chris Martin said. “It makes things more difficult. We spend extra time making sure the fire is fully out and no hotspots.”

Martin said a 911 call about 5 p.m. warned that a fence had caught fire, but by the time Engine 96 arrived on the scene, it had already spread to the garage of the home at 2260 Cooper Road.

Despite their valiant efforts, the Corvette was destroyed, along with boxes and equipment stored inside the garage. Firefighters had the fire under control within 15 minutes, but enough damage was caused to the house that the residents could not stay there.

“They knocked the fire down pretty quick considering how well it was involved when we arrived,”Martin said.

However, the winds fed the fire enough that it caused slight smoke damage and some fire damage to the eaves of the neighboring house – but not enough to keep them from remaining there.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the blaze, the cause of which is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

Chief Martin also urged residents to be careful when using barbecues or any other outdoor flame.

“We ask for added awareness and more vigilance on windy days,” Martin said. “Make sure you use good fire-safe practices.”

Four engine companies, the city’s ladder truck and a second ladder truck from the depot fire department responded to the fire call with 19 firefighters.
