Last week we shared details of Callaway’s engineers successfully supercharging the first direct injected engine in the Gen 5 family from General Motors. The work that was done included the install of an Eaton TVS Supercharger onto a 2014 5.3L Silverado truck. In addition to the hardware, Callaway’s engineers worked on the calibration with the electronic powertrain management system which includes Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing and Active Fuel Management.
This work has given Callaway a jump on the competition as it prepares to offer a Callaway-engineered 2014 Corvette Stingray. But not all work is being done under the hood. Callaway has always offered their own hood treatment for the Callaway-tuned Corvettes as the supercharger requires additional headroom. In advance of Corvettes at Carlisle, Callaway is showing a sneak preview of how that new hood will look.
There’s no doubt that the new Gen 5 Small block engines found in the Corvette Stingray and the Chevrolet Silverado are the most technologically advanced engines that Chevrolet has ever built. But concerns about some of the new fuel savers like direct injection, variable valve timing and the active fuel management means that tuners will have the step up their game to unlock the hidden power the LT1 is capable of providing.
Although many tuners are already promoting their packages for LT1 upgrades, only Callaway has demonstrated the ability to actually supercharge an engine in the “Eco-Tec” family by installing an Eaton TVS Supercharger on a 2014 5.3L Silverado.
Callaway Competition GmbH, the German-based segment of Callaway Cars, has been chosen to develop the new Corvette C7 into a GT3-class race car and submit it for homologation from the FIA.
Original equipment manufacturers like Chevrolet have to authorize specialists like Callaway to submit the homologation forms needed to allow their version of the car to be the one allowed in FIA competition.
Callaway Corvettes have a long history with Chevrolet’s sports car.
To commemorate that history that goes all the way back to 1987, Callaway’s Dealer Program Manager Chris Chessnoe gave key members of the Corvette engineering, product management, and production staff a copy of a new book by Reeves Callaway.
Last week Chris from Callaway Cars tipped us off to a thread he started on the Corvette Forum where he shows off the most recent Callaway C16 to roll out of their shop. He says the Night Race Blue machine is all finished and ready to be shipped to its owner. We wish it was coming to our garage instead.
Last year, Callaway produced a special run of 25 Grand Sports to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Callaway’s RPO B2K – the first turbo-charged Corvettes offered by the factory. These special B2K Anniversary Corvettes were snapped up quickly and now we hear the only one left for sale in the entire country is at Criswell Corvette – the #3/25 B2K Callaway Corvette.
A couple weeks back, we showed you the C7-based Callaway Shooting Brake Concept called the Aerowagon and its design really turned a lot of heads. But the designers at the Old Lyme, Connecticut tuning shop weren’t finished yet with us. For April Fools Day, Callaway introduces a matching trailer called the AeroWagonette – a new take on how to transport “bothersome” kids when you only have a two-seat sports car.
TV’s longest running automotive series, MotorWeek, will feature 2 Callaway Corvettes on an episode debuting this week on PBS stations. The show will subsequently air on the Velocity and SPEED networks. Tune in to see the MotorWeek crew put a 25th anniversary SC620 and a SC652 427 Convertible through their paces.
