When Harley Earl left General Motors in 1963, he was gifted with this unique Corvette Sting Ray Convertible that was customized to his interests by the style department he originally created. The Harley Earl Corvette was the featured vehicle at Mecum’s 2013 Chicago auction and a little after 3pm ET on Saturday afternoon, the hammer fell with the sold price reaching $1.5 million.
Right on the heels of the record breaking 1967 L88 Stingray which sold for $3.2M at Mecum’s Dallas Auction September 7, Dana Mecum is out to break his own record for the price paid for a Corvette. The “Dealmaker” knew he’d have to do something spectacular for an encore at his upcoming Chicagoland Auction, October 10-12, and as if pulling a rabbit out of a hat he is magically offering the special modified 1963 Corvette given to Harley Earl by GM honoring his contribution to the corporation and Corvette, Harley Earl’s personal Corvette.
One of our favorite models from the 1960′s is up for grabs this weekend at Mecum’s 2013 Dallas auction. It’s a rare Red/Red 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe with the Z06 racing package. The Red Corvette Split Window comes from the Buddy Herin Collection which also is offering a 1967 L88 Corvette Convertible we featured last month.
It took Maureen Robinson a long time to be able to fully appreciate her father’s 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.
Her dad, Michael O’Brien, bought the light blue split window coupe in 1964 and seemed to have a sense early-on that one day it would become a collector’s item – in more ways than one.
It’s time for Throwback Thursday where we feature vintage photos of Corvettes. Today’s subject is a one near and dear to our hearts – taking your Corvette racing!
We’re seeing nothing older than a 1965 Corvette in the picture and if you look right in the middle of the photograph, it appears there is one and perhaps two black 1963 Fuel Injected Sting Ray Coupes.
It appeared that the 2013 Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s was going to be rained out on Sunday when Saturday’s storms prevented much of the event set up. Though rain was forecast, after only a brief shower the 374 exhibitors rushed to get their cars displayed on the beautiful but wet fairways of the golf course. Though the temperatures were unusually cool, the rain held off except for a short sprinkle around noon and the wet weather didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the car owners or the 10,000 enthusiasts who braved the threatening skies and to view some of the finest cars in the country.
Ever since I saw this photo a couple weeks back, I’ve been meaning to post it here. I always enjoy seeing old photos of Corvettes in their vintage settings, which for me harkins back to a somewhat more innocent time for America. So why not use the occasion to kick off a new weekly series of posts with vintage pictures of Corvettes!
This 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible and the young lady sitting on the hood was captured at Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida.
