C4 Corvette

1989 Corvette Destroyed by Fireworks

Chicago area resident Rich Szatkowski spent the 4th of July finishing the interior restoration of his prized 1989 Corvette: New seats, new carpet, new steering wheel and a new stereo. As he washed the carpet earlier in the day, he left the roof panel off so it could dry out properly. Unfortunately, a neighborhood firework found its way through the open roof, igniting the interior and destroying the Corvette.

The news gets even worse for Rich. Because the car was undergoing restoration and was not being driven, Rich did not have insurance on the Corvette.

1984 Corvette ZR1 – The Custom Vettamino Edition

by Keith Cornett on May 8, 2008

1984 Chevy Vetteamino

I haven’t checked to see if there is a full moon out or not, but for whatever reason we are coming across a full spectrum of Corvette oddities this week. Yesterday it was the 1954 custom Corvette Hardtop we spotted on Craigslist. Today its a Chevy Vettamino, a chopped 1984 Corvette with a very El Camino-like bed for those trips to Home Depot or for helping your friend move a couch.

The brains behind this $115,000 (no kidding!) modification was the original owner of Bayliner Boats who unfortunately has passed. Like most over-the-top customizations, the Corvette is listed for just a fraction of that amount at $35,000 or best offer which according to our Corvette Price Guide is still $14,000 higher than the $21,000 high price for a Condition 1 1984 Coupe.

The Corvette does feature some nice upgrades like the 1991 rear end fashioned into a functional tailgate and the chrome C4 ZR-1 wheels. But its the ZR-1 badge on the back that makes us wonder exactly what is hiding under the hood.

The ad states that the sellers missed the deadline to have this car entered into the Barrett Jackson auto auction, which of course means “Only a drunk rich guy whose a member of the More Money than Brains club” would buy it. But hey, their loss is your gain, right? Now if it only had a topper…

1993 Corvette 40th Anniversary Coupe

I present this video from Mecum’s Muscle Cars and More April 26th auction for two reasons. The first is that the commentators are absolutely correct in saying Corvettes like this 1993 40th Anniversary Edition are a great way for get started in the Corvette hobby. They represent value and performance and should be nearing the end of declining prices. That being said, I wish I was in Indy with a bidder’s card when this Corvette stalled and then was hammered for $11,000.

The 40th Anniversary Ruby Red Coupes was a popular choice in 1993 with 6,749 out of 21,590 produced. This Corvette Coupe appears to be in regular driver condition and features the very reliable LT1 350 ci 300 hp V8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Our Corvette Price Guide puts the average value of the 1993 Anniversary Coupe at $17,900 and while we show this model still depreciating at 4% per year, $11,000 for this Corvette is a great buy.

Supercar Mashup: 1993 Corvette Diablo FI Stingray

by Keith Cornett on March 13, 2008

1993 FI Stingray

We are intrigued by this mating of two of the world’s most recognizable supercars – Corvette and Lamborghini – creating what the owner has renamed the FI Stingray. The car features a 1993 Corvette Chassis and custom front-end mated to the rear end of a Lamborghini Diablo. The Corvette was spotted at the 2008 Canadian International Autoshow last month in Toronto.

So, was this experiment successful? Click the Comment Link below and let me know what you think.

Video: Building the Last C4 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on November 2, 2007

A friend of mine sent me this video which tells the story of the assembly of the last C4 Corvette, 1996′s VIN 21,477. The Corvette was purchased by Mid America Motorwork’s Mike Yager who was able to follow the corvette down the line as it was being assembled. Mike talked and joked with the workers and he encourged them to leave their signature somewhere on the car. The Corvette still resides in Mike’s collection to this day.

Flickr Photo of the Day: 1986 Corvette Convertible

From the Flickr Corvette Pool:

1986 Corvette Options and Facts 1986 marked the return of the Corvette Convertible, a body style last seen in 1975. The 1986 model year was third in C4 production with a total of 35,109 Corvettes produced. Production was split with 27,794 Coupes built vs 7,315 Convertibles. 1986 marked the first year that the price of a Corvette climbed over the $30,000 mark. MRSP for the Convertible $32,032 while the Coupe was modestly priced at $27,027. Only one engine option available:
     350 ci (L98)
Aluminum head engines produced 235 hp
Iron head engines produced 230 hp 17 Exterior Colors Available:
Rarest Color was Copper Metallic. Only 4 produced.
     8 Interior colors were offered
How to Spot a 1986 Corvette:
Differences between the 1984-1990 Corvettes were very minor. The easiest way to spot a 1986 Corvette may be the wheels. In 1986, the wheel centers were unpainted. In 1984 and ’85, the wheel centers were painted black while in 1987 the centers were painted gray. The center-mounted third brake light also made its appearance on the Corvette in 1986. 1986 Corvette Highlights:
The 1986 Corvette paced the Indianapolis 500 and Chevrolet designated all convertible models as pace cars. Each convertible was sold with an Indy 500 Pace Car decal kit that could be installed by the dealer. Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) became standard as well as the new VATS vehicle anti-theft system which has a chip implanted at the base of the ignition key. Chevrolet paid tribute to New Jersey Chevrolet dealer Malcom Konner with a special run of 50 Malcom Konner Commemorative Edition Corvettes. 1986 Corvette Values:
The early C4 models are starting their appreciation curve and with the return of the roadster for Corvette, values for the 1986 model are strong. Our Corvette Price Guide puts the average price of the 1986 Corvette Coupe at $9,300 with a one year appreciation of 2%. The Convertible model does even better with an average value of $13,000 and +8% appreciation over the year prior.

Corvette Values: 1985 Lingenfelter Corvette Coupe

by Keith Cornett on July 3, 2007

GH from Washington submitted the following car to Corvette Values:

1985 Corvette Coupe1985 Corvette Coupe, red with graphite leather interior. VIN is 1G1YY0784F5121XXX. 59,000 Miles, 383 Lingenfelter conversion with the original motor crated and stored. Manual transmission. Power steering, brakes, windows, A/C. Borla mufflers. Paint is in good condition and interior is excellent. No documentation available.
The VIN #1G1YY0784FS121XXX indicates it was built midway through the 1985 production year at which time a total of 39,729 Coupes were built. This Corvette is Bright Red in color with a Graphite leather interior. The Bright Red paint was selected by the majority of buyers in the 1985 production year. The paint can be considered good, however, a few ‘road chips’ in the paint were noted. It is powered by a modified 383 Lingenfelter built motor. A Lingenfelter conversion has been a growing modification for late model Corvettes especially the C5 Corvette (1997-2004). This one can be termed an early conversion. The original motor was retained and has been crated for future use should this Corvette be returned to factory original condition. The existing motor is coupled with a manual transmission. This Corvette is equipped with the expected power steering, brakes and windows and also has air conditioning. From a price perspective, few 1985 Lingenfelter Corvette conversions are found and offered for sale today. On a comparative basis, a Callaway Twin Turbo motor was offered in 1987-91 at an option price of $20-30,000 depending on the model year. In today’s market, the Callaway option will add $10,000 to the average resale price of a Corvette. We place a value of $19,000 on this 1985 described Corvette Coupe based on the Callaway Turbo price rationale above. Corvette Appraisals:

Corvette Values: 1989 Coupe

by Keith Cornett on August 15, 2005

LD of Midway, GA submitted the following to Corvette Values:

1989 White Coupe. VIN: 1G1YY2188K5106318. 113K Miles, Non original motor with 7K miles L98 350 ci engine, automatic transmission. Tan interior, cloth seats. Power Steering, Brakes and Windows. Condition is average/street driven.

This 89 Coupe is one of 16,663 Coupes built and was assembled early on based on the VIN. Considered to be in good street driven condition, it has 113K original miles. Powered by the non-original 350-240 motor, it has an auto transmission as did over 22,000 Corvettes made that year. White was the second most popular color ordered (5,426) and the saddle cloth interior was a rare choice with only 400 ordered with this option in 1989. The Corvette is equipped with the standard power options including power steering, brakes and windows. Our value for this Corvette is $11,000. Our Corvette Price Database shows a one year depreciation in price to be 1% which may indicate the 1989 Corvette Coupe will soon start to appreciate in value over the next few years.

Flying Car Wrecks Corvettes

by Keith Cornett on August 8, 2005

I find it amazing when searching some of the aggregator sites for Corvette news, all I can find are stories about how some guy dies while speeding in his Corvette. This blog will not be the place for these types of stories, but in some cases when a Corvette is involved in a spectacular crash, and nobody was injured, it may be worth commenting on.

And such is the story behind Pat and Mike Shannon, owners of a 1990 and 1995 Corvette, as well as a 1993 Cadillac Seville.

Imagine waking up and hearing a horrendous crash in the middle night and finding out that all three of your cars were destroyed by a drunk driver.

A New Paltz, NY man had left a party down the street from the Shannon house. He lost control of his car, drove up a lawn and went airborne with his car over a steep dropoff.

Getting air for at least 15 feet, his car landed on top of all three vehicles the Shannon’s owned, a 1993 Cadillac Seville, a blue 1990 Corvette and a red 1995 Corvette. The impact pushed the Cadillac into the SShannon’s garage.

The Shannons had purchased the red Corvette only two months earlier. They had made arrangements to sell the blue Corvette, and the buyer was scheduled to arrive in a few days to complete the purchase.
