Corvette owners generally don’t mind drawing a little attention to their cars.
But there’s good attention — and then there’s the kind that comes with flashing blue lights, a hefty fine and your Corvette riding home on a tow truck.
A 26-year-old driver in Canada found that out after West Vancouver Police clocked his bright yellow 2008 Corvette Z06 traveling 180 km/h — about 112 mph — on Cypress Bowl Road.
The speed limit?
Just 60 km/h, or about 37 mph.
That means the Corvette was traveling roughly 75 mph over the posted limit.
Police spotted the Z06 speeding along the road around 10:30 p.m. Friday and pulled it over. The driver’s night ended with a $483 fine for excessive speed and the Corvette being impounded for seven days.
Cypress Bowl Road apparently isn’t the place to test how quickly a Z06 can stretch its legs.
“Cypress Bowl Road is certainly on our radar and it’s an area that is going to continue to get attention,” West Vancouver Police spokesperson Suzanne Birch said. “It’s an iconic stretch of road, but the speed limit is 60 km/h.”
And there are good reasons for that limit.
The roadway includes a large S-curve and areas where pedestrians cross to reach scenic viewpoints. Drivers can also encounter wildlife, including deer and bears.
The dangers aren’t merely hypothetical.
Cypress Bowl Road was the scene of a fatal crash in September 2021 in which two 20-year-old men were killed after a Jeep Cherokee crashed while entering a hairpin turn, overturned and ejected one of its occupants through the sunroof.
A 2008 Corvette Z06 certainly has the hardware to reach triple-digit speeds without much effort. From the factory, its 7.0-liter LS7 V8 produced 505 horsepower, making it one of the fastest Corvettes of its era.
But there’s a big difference between can and should.
The driver of this yellow Z06 wanted to exercise some of those 505 horses on Friday night.
For the next seven days, at least, they’re all staying in the barn.

We have roads just like that where I live, most are 35 mph. It was a few years ago I was driving a friend home and a Moose walked out onto the road, I was going slow enough to stop but close enough to get a good look at him. I bet the nose of my Corvette would almost fit under him, almost. I use to complain about that 35mph speed limit until that night, all woods and no houses with a few nice straightaway’s. Temptation….
I ski up Cypress all winter and have for many many years….
Lots of bears, deer even the occasional cougar are on that road, year round.
Wild curves come up fast esp. when going super fast. I love Corvettes and speed
but that police officer, she was right.
Best save those pangs for the track.
