Corvettes for Sale: Original Low Mileage 1979 Corvette L-82 4-Speed on Craigslist

This low-mileage black-on-black ’79 Corvette features plenty of options, including the optional L82 engine and M21 four-speed manual transmission.

Now it can be yours for the asking price of $18,000, or if you happen to live near the Tucson, Arizona, area, the owner says in his Craigslist ad that he’s willing to consider “interesting” local trades.

Showing just 64,000 miles, the C3 is powered by the high-performance L82 350 V8 and equipped with what the seller describes as a “very rare” factory M21 close-ratio four-speed. Indeed, the Corvette Black Book says only 4,062 M21s left the St. Louis factory out of a total record-setting run of 53,807 – only 7.5 percent. The L82 wasn’t quite as rare, but the 14,516 sold still represented only a little over a quarter of the production total.

The Corvette also has the FE7 Gymkhana suspension, giving this particular ’79 an especially appealing combination for someone looking for a more performance-oriented example. Only 12,321 were built that year.

The lengthy options list doesn’t end there.

According to the seller, the Corvette came equipped with air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows and locks, tilt steering wheel, power antenna and rear-window defogger.

About the only boxes that weren’t checked were front and rear spoilers and cruise control, the latter of which the seller notes wasn’t available with the manual transmission.

The car still wears its factory black lacquer paint and retains its original black leather interior, along with the removable T-tops.

There have been a couple of noticeable changes over the years.

A previous owner in Tucson added Appliance wire wheels and Hooker chrome headers around 1980 or 1981, giving the Corvette a distinctly period look. For those who prefer a more factory appearance, the seller says the original aluminum wheels are also available.

Documentation includes the factory invoice.

While 1979 came from an era when Corvette horsepower numbers were a long way from what we enjoy today, the combination of the L82, close-ratio four-speed and FE7 suspension makes this black-on-black example more interesting than your average late-’70s C3.

And at $18,000, there are two ways to put it in your garage.

Bring cash — or perhaps something interesting enough to tempt its owner into making a trade.

  1. When you add headers and side pipes and change to aftermarket wheels, it’s not going to win a top flight award for originality. The word “original” needs to be dropped from the title of this article.
