It’s not often you see a C8 crash that splits the Corvette in half.
But that’s exactly what happened early Wednesday morning in East Providence, Rhode Island, leaving the driver critically injured and neighbors stunned by the destruction.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. along Metacomet Avenue, where the mid-engine Corvette was literally torn into two pieces, with its front and rear sections coming to rest on opposite sides of the roadway.
According to WJAR-TV, debris was scattered across the street, and a roadside weight-limit sign was knocked partially to the ground.
Nearby resident Sean Martin and his wife were inside their home when they heard a tremendous crash.
Martin looked outside and at first thought he was seeing the wreckage of two separate vehicles. Only later did he realize the pieces belonged to the same Corvette.
He immediately called 911.
Martin told WJAR that the driver appeared to be underneath part of the wreckage. Blood was still visible at the scene hours after the crash.
“For a car to be split in half like that, I would say that some speed was involved, but I really can’t say,” Martin said.
Neighbors reported seeing the front section of the Corvette smashed into the roadside sign, while the rear section and driver were found across the street. Several residents told the television station that speeding has been a recurring problem along Metacomet Avenue, particularly late at night, although none recalled witnessing a crash quite this devastating.
Police have not determined what caused the wreck or whether excessive speed was a factor.
The driver’s identity has not been officially released, but employees of Ink Lab Tattoo on Armistice Boulevard in nearby Pawtucket confirmed to WJAR that the injured man owns the business.
He was transported to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition.
Photos of the mangled Corvette quickly attracted attention on Reddit, where enthusiasts struggled to comprehend how the car could have been torn apart so completely.
“That might be the craziest C8 crash I’ve ever seen,” wrote user random2821. “An almost perfect 50/50 split. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one clean through the frame like that.”
Another commenter, Independent_Island74, expressed similar disbelief.
“Jesus was he going faster than the speed of sound to rip the car in half,” the user wrote.
Others focused less on the damage to the Corvette and more on the potential consequences for the driver and anyone else who might have been nearby.
One commenter expressed hope that the driver would survive while pointing out that the crash could have involved an innocent motorist or even a nearby home.
Of course, photographs alone cannot establish how fast the Corvette was traveling or exactly what caused it to break apart.
Those are questions East Providence police will attempt to answer as their investigation continues.
For now, the most important concern isn’t the fate of this once-heavily-customized C8 with scissor doors and red rims.
It’s whether the man behind the wheel will survive.

Any bets the scissors doors modification probably weakened the structural integrity, although it did have to be exceeding the speed limit.
For all of you Corvette owners who are going through a divorce, this is not the best way to split your assets 50/50. When I went through my divorce 20 years ago, we split the house 50/50. She got the inside, and I got the outside…
I’m sure they were slowly backing into a parking space. (Not!)
It seems the C8 is pretty crash worthly. People walk away from wrecks that would of killed them in another car. The caliber of new Corvette owners is the reason for so many C8 crashes
A lot of guys, are buying and driving a car, that’s well beyond their driving skills. High performance car and low performance drivers.
I live in state collage pa and I’ve seen a c7 hit a pole and split in 2 the police also thought it was more than one car but it wasn’t. Anyway the driver did die ans speed had a lot to do with the crash
