Corvettes for Sale: 1954 Corvette Project Car Offered on Craigslist for $23,500

Whenever I spot a 1954 Corvette, I think back to ninth grade homeroom and Mr. Wages, who kept a tired old ’54 under his carport for years — a dream waiting on time, money, or both. This one in Larchmont, New York, feels a lot like that car: a project frozen in place, complete enough to tempt you, rough enough to scare you, and now listed on Craigslist for $23,500 (offers accepted).

The seller’s description is straightforward: original body and chassis, a little damage around the passenger side headlight, a rust free frame, and most of the drivetrain still with the car — the Blue Flame six, the cast iron Powerglide, and the ’54 rear end. What’s missing is nearly everything shiny. No chrome, no brightwork, and no interior to speak of beyond the windshield frame and the side curtains in their bag. “Look at pictures closely,” the listing warns. Fair advice.

It’s worth remembering how close Chevrolet came to pulling the plug on the Corvette after 1955. Early sales were so soft that the car’s future was genuinely in doubt. But Chevy stuck with it, and the Corvette has been a showroom fixture ever since. That history is part of what makes a rough ’54 like this intriguing: even in project form, it’s one of only 3,640 built in the model’s second year.

The body on this one is mostly solid, aside from the fiberglass damage up front. A specialist could fix it, but the rest of the panels look straight. With the car already torn down, a full nut and bolt restoration seems like the only sensible path. The seller says the frame is rock solid, which is a big plus, but the missing trim means the next owner will be hunting for seat frames, gauges, switches, wiring — the whole interior ecosystem.

Mechanically, the car is “pretty much complete,” but the six cylinder and Powerglide will need rebuilding. That combo was part of the Corvette’s early struggle. The Blue Flame made respectable power for the era, but the two-speed automatic dulled the car’s performance until the V8 and three speed manual arrived in 1955. Purists will appreciate that this one still has its original setup, even if it means more work.

Restoring a ’54 Corvette is not for the faint of heart. Parts are expensive, patience is mandatory, and the final bill will be substantial. But the upside is real: a properly restored example can top $60,000, and values continue to climb. Whether that math works for you depends on your appetite for long term projects — and your tolerance for fiberglass dust.

The comments on the listing tell the story as well as anything: Tbone: “Not a lot of upside… but someone will buy it. A blank canvas so to speak.”

Dave Phillips: “I could live with the 6 but the Powerglide would be a bridge too far… With a real gearbox, it would satisfy a childhood fantasy.”

JohnfromSC: “Parts were much higher than imagined… making a restoration impossible. They restomodded theirs and still made very little.”

JR: “At this price the term money pit comes to mind.”

Maybe so. But for the right buyer — someone who sees what this car could be rather than what it is — a stalled project can still spark the imagination. Just ask Mr. Wages.
