A Saturday afternoon on Queensway in British Columbia, Canada turned tragic when a yellow C5 Corvette convertible careened into a family home, leaving the driver dead and a neighborhood shaken.
The 2600 block on the east side of the busy corridor between La Salle Avenue and Inlander Street erupted in chaos around 2 p.m. as the Corvette—now upside down amid the wreckage, with the top of the windshield frame crushed and the driver’s door lying on top of the frame after being ripped off during extrication efforts—landed next to the house where a family had been safely inside moments before. First responders found the two occupants of the Corvette trapped inside and the home’s structure compromised with the roof of a small porch dangling unsupported and a nearby bay window totally smashed out.
Firefighters worked frantically with extrication equipment to free both occupants. While the passenger survived with non-life-threatening injuries, the driver’s life couldn’t be saved.
“Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, media relations officer for the Prince George RCMP. “Given the totality of the circumstances surrounding this event, our police investigation has since been concluded and turned over to the BC Coroners Service.”
The two people in the home were not injured, according to a City of Prince George official, who said the damage to the structure and the car is estimated at $50,000 each.
