[VIDEO] Autotopia LA Takes a Closer Look at this 1971 Corvette LT1 that's been Modernized and Now Makes 643 HP

What appears to a be a stock C3 Corvette with a nice set of wheels turns out to be anything but ordinary. In a new video, Autotopia LA is featuring this a great looking 1971 Corvette Coupe that was the subject of a three-year build.

The car’s owner Tom says he purchased the number’s matching Corvette LT1 which still was wearing its original paint. However, Tom felt the stock performance was a bit lacking and so he set out to remedy the situation while attempting to maintain the car’s original appearance. The result was a new 400 ci V8 which was dynoed at an impressive 643 horsepower and 595 lb-ft of torque. This old-school set up with the carbureted V8 provides a great rumble that sets it apart from other restomods with modern LS engines. We also like how the matte blue finish on the valve covers and air filter cover really gives the engine bay an added reason to look closer.

Drivability was important to Tom, and so he made sure the car was set up right by adding power steering and air conditioning. He also replaced the entire suspension with components from Vansteel, and the addition of the TKO 5-Speed manual transmission and a rear-end with 3.55 gears ensures the car offers a perfect balance between performance and highway cruising. Tom says his tachometer is 2500 rpm at 85 mph and the lower RPMs have the added benefit of being able to have a conversation with the passenger.

The wheel and brake setup is also impressive. It features stock Corvette brakes from Willwood, and Tom added the 10-spoke Bose wheels which gives it the restomod stance. The wheels and tires are sized 18×9 (275s) in the front and 18x10s (285s) in the back and they really fill up with the wheel wells nicely.

Like most Autotopia LA videos, they also include a driving segment to really experience the car, and this C3 Corvette really stands out with both looks and the sound coming from the 3-inch stainless steel exhaust. The host says to Tom, “The sound is what keeps grabbing me hard. It’s like it’s loud enough that you know you’re you know you’re in a muscle car, but it’s not overly loud, right?”

And while it the Blue ’71 Coupe looks like a show car, it was built to be a driver, and it does it very well. Tom’s modifications have not only made the car more powerful, but also more enjoyable to drive and that’s what makes a true driver’s car: One that is capable of long trips without making you feel like you’ve been on one.

Nice car, very derivable, small mild mannered motor, Flat tappet cam, no power adders, runs on pump gas…………..and 643 hp? That dyno needs a serious calibration
