By 1957, after an inauspicious beginning, the “new” Corvette was coming into its own, with sales nearly doubling to 6,339.
One such example is currently being offered on eBay, where 20 bids have pushed the peak to $42,500 – still shy of the “very fair” reserve, the seller says.
Chevy dramatically expanded its selection of engine options in ’57, with six versions of the 283 offered – two carbureted variants and four with mechanical fuel-injection. Only 1,040 such FI cars were built, including this one. The four-speed manual transmission – like the one in this unit – also made its debut as a $188.30 option. Only 664 customers chose the new transmission, with 4,282 sticking with the no-cost three-speed manual and another 1,393 opting for the $188.30 Powerglide automatic.
Unfortunately, this car’s original engine has been replaced by a 1973 or 1974 350 truck engine with a series 905 distributor and double hump heads, capable now of generating around 300 horsepower, according to the seller.
The deal does include an original fuel injection unit, however, a series 4520 used on 250 or 283 horsepower engines in ’57, as well as an extra correct rear end and a new side molding to replace a dented one on the car now.
The body – which includes a beige soft top and body-color hardtop – looks to be in good shape, with the seller rating the Cascade Green paint “about a 7 out of 10,” calling it “nice” but in need of “a good detail.” He also rates the chrome and the frame to be in “nice” condition, as well as the beige interior that is in need of “a good cleaning.”
The current owner has had the car for more than five years, and after originally being purchased new in California (with a “clean” title from that state), it’s now based in Maryland.
“This is a nice driver quality running and driving car,” the seller says, warning that “before taking this Corvette out on the road, it should be gone through and checked.”
