This customized 1964 Corvette convertible instantly transported me to the mid-’70s when one of the most popular color combinations for the Olds Cutlass was brown with a lighter tan landau top.

Upon closer examination, however, I realized the top on this ’64 Sting Ray being offered on eBay for $32,000 might actually be a dirty white, but the colorful Cutlass memories are still valid.

This C2 Corvette also stirred up memories of other customized cars like this as I was growing up, with its bumperless Mako Shark-style front end and ducktail rear spoiler.

Most enthusiasts never treated their Sting Rays to mods like this back in the day, but with the passage of time, we’re actually digging the look, especially with the side pipes, mag wheels, fender flares, and white-letter tires.

Admittedly, this car needs some work. The original 327/365 horsepower L76 engine has been replaced with another non-running 327. The seller says the new powerplant doesn’t run, though it does turn over. He “never really put any energy” into getting it up and running again because of plans to install an LS under the hood.

The numbers-matching four-speed manual transmission does remain in place, and the frame “looks good,” according to the listing. The dash pad is described as “very nice,” and the spare tire carrier is “still there.”

We spotted this car on Barn Finds, where one reader advises against returning the car to its stock front end, noting that while a new front clip is available for anywhere from $2,500 to $8,500 plus shipping, “if you want to return the car to original style, that is just the beginning. You will also need: complete headlight assemblies ($3,500), with motors ($1,000 for aftermarket at least double for original), linkage, wiring, switches, wiring harness, grill, hood, bumpers, brackets, parking lights ++++. Then there is the rear clip + flared fenders to deal with… Oh, and seats top and paint. And wheels & tires. The engine, brakes, suspension, and transmission will all need an overhaul/replacement . Even doing most of it yourself, buying & returning this ride to even kinda original will likely cost double its finished value.”

Another reader simply suggested the installation of a big-block engine and “at least” 15 colors of layered big flake lacquer.

Does this Sting Ray tickle your fancy the way it does mine, or am I just being a nostalgic old man?
