We’ve been following the custom 1962 Corvette restomod that has been under construction by Chip Foose for several years now, and it seems like we are getting a little closer to the finish line. Our last update back in July on the car had Chip and his crew prepping the body and then painting it. This video actually came out just before that, and it features Chip designing a set of custom wheels for the car.
During his “Overhaulin” show days, one of our favorite parts was where he sketched out the design of the car before working on it, and that’s what you’re going to see here. He already did the sketch of the car (see below), but you’re going to see him custom design a new wheel for the car.
Chip says that with each of his custom builds, he likes to give each one their own custom-designed set of wheels, and so he goes about designing the new set for the Blue 1962 roadster. For reference, here is the sketch he did in 2021 for this 1962 Corvette that the shop has been working on.
Once Chip finishes the wheels design and the customer approves it, he then sends it off to his friends at Wheel Pros who then create a computer design version which is further refined. Once the customer signs off on that final version, the wheels are then manufactured.
From there, Chip goes into design mode, using a variety of pens and ink to create the perfect wheel for the car. Towards the end, it was already looking great and then Chip busts out the airbrush which takes the drawing to the next level. Once finished he holds it up for approval:
“So, I got the sketch done. Now, in the past, I would have done a drawing like this, made a Xerox copy, put that through the fax, waited to hear from the owner. But now, I took a quick shot, shot it over to Gary. He’s already responded. He loves the wheel. Now I’ve sent it on to Eric at Wheelpros. Now it’ll get put into the computer. We’ll actually finalize the design. I’ve got to measure the car and make sure we’ve got all the dimensions to make both the front and the back wheels because it will be a staggered fitment. But uh technology is great. It’s a wonderful life.”
