After a successful debut this summer in the United Kingdom at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Chevrolet’s Corvette E-Ray is now the third model from the C8 generation to be offered in the United Kingdom. The Performance Hybrid E-Ray will start at £153K ($206,780 USD) for the Coupe and £159K ($214,890 USD) for the Convertible, and the first customer orders were scheduled to arrive in September.
This morning our news feed is showing a number of Corvette E-Ray First Drives and Reviews coming from the U.K. auto media, which tells us that there was a Ride and Drive event held last month with the articles just hitting today now that the embargo is over.
Overall, the reviews are very positive for the American sports car, and not just the Corvette E-Ray as Chevy made sure to also have the Right-Hand drive Stingray and Z06 on hand for the journalists to drive as well.

A mid-engined hybrid Corvette might seem like heresy to diehard fans of America’s iconic supercar, but in terms of execution, things have gone very, very right. Not only is the mix of modern e-motor and old-school V8 an addictive, rapid combination, but the E-Ray’s ride, handling, transmission and brakes are all superb, too. Our one tiny reservation was that our drive was slightly limited by the conditions; with more open roads and dryer conditions to really push the car to its limits, it’s quite possible the E-Ray could chalk up that final extra half-star.

The E-Ray powertrain is wonderful, usefully gruntier than the Stingray’s and better sounding than the flat-plane Z06. Better sounding than anything else out there, really, snarling and bellowing in a fashion that no turbo V8 can hope to replicate. The six-cylinder cars at this money can’t hope to match the aural stimulation of a small block, so rich and raw is the sound. The DCT is broadly a very good match as well, with short and sharp ratios and responsive paddles; it doesn’t love changes right towards the limiter, though there’s little cause to ever be there given the performance on offer throughout the rev range. A V8 has always been the Corvette’s USP; now it feels more abundantly appealing than ever. Even at a test average of 18mpg.

What I can say is that the E-Ray certainly has plenty of grip and stance. One of the car’s best qualities is how it holds the road, with impressive body control and a suppleness to the ride that some European rivals can barely dream of – even on the UK’s tremendously scarred tarmac. Even in sport mode, the MagneRide adaptive damper set-up is pliant and forgiving over our coarse roads and yet can control the E-Ray impressively well when you want to get aggressive.

In the US, much of the marketing message behind the E-Ray is pushing its virtues as an all-wheel-drive sports car for those parts of the country with harsh winters. But electrification has also brought both a new level of performance and, for those not chasing ultimate lap times, a broader dynamic appeal to this celebrated old sports car. For UK buyers too, the E-Ray feels like the Corvette to have.

If you can get hold of one somehow, there’s absolutely no reason to avoid this Chevrolet halo model. The Corvette E-Ray is a quite brilliant high-end performance machine, with fabulous on-road manners, the sort of speed and soundtrack that buyers demand at this level of the market, and a novelty factor that something like a Porsche 911 can only dream about. There are only a few minor foibles with it, but otherwise there’s much to adore about this latest entrant into the Corvette’s long-running legend.

It’s note-able that the reviews expressed a few comments that compared the e-Ray to the Stingray, but not Z06. Perhaps Z06 isn’t available there. Just imagine how the reception would be in the UK if they could get a ZR1X!
With all the noise ordnances and such, most would find it exceedingly difficult to own a Z06 in Europe.
