Derek Provan knew he just had to have a new C8 as soon as he saw one.
In the past, that might have been a bit hard to do since Provan lives in the United Kingdom, a place not noted for an overabundance of American sports cars.
But now, thanks to a deal between General Motors and UK car dealer Arnold Clark, Provan was able to fulfill his dream to own a mid-engine Corvette – complete with right-hand drive.
“I’ve owned prestige cars for a while and it’s always been a dream of mine to own an American supercar, but I never fancied the left-hand drive,” Provan told Car Dealer Magazine. “I was near the new Arnold Clark Corvette showroom in Glasgow a week before it opened and noticed the row of Corvettes lined up outside. They immediately caught my attention.”
Provan says he has always loved the old Corvette Stingrays, “and when I was told this one was right-hand drive, it was meant to be.”
He calls the new C8 “a real head-turner,” adding that “I’ve not seen anyone else out on the roads in one yet. I love that it’s different and feels so sophisticated.”
Provan praised the staff at Arnold Clark for being “really helpful” and making the buying process “so simple.”
Arnold Clark has already begun “handovers” (apparently that’s what they call delivery across the pond” of new C8s after reaching a franchise deal with GM last December to represent Corvette at sites in Glasgow and Altrincham.
Callum Rankin, group brand director at Arnold Clark, sent out his congratulations to Provan after he picked up the keys to his new Corvette. “I know he loves the car already,” Rankin said, “and we wish him many years of happy driving.”
Rankin says the dealership is “delighted” to bring Corvette to the UK market, adding that “the models have already proved to be very popular.”

Stingrays and Z06s are already arriving at the dealership, and this summer, electrified E-Rays will likewise begin arriving at Arnold Clark branches, he said.
“It’s great to be able to offer our customers access to these award-winning cars at our showrooms in Glasgow and Manchester,” Rankin said.

I’m glad that he bought it, but I have to wonder how much Derek had to pay for this car (in US dollars). How much was shipping? Was there a tariff? What about a Value Added Tax? Cost of right side driver option? Any other European regulation conversion compliance? Knowing these things would make this article a lot more interesting and informative. It might help us better understand current events.
Why are so many more foreign sports cars sold in the USA vs. C8s, Mustangs and such sold in Europe? We’re talking orders of magnitude… Is it just buyer preference or something else?
