Back in the day, the 1963 convertible was more popular than that “new-fangled” split-window coupe.

When the ’63s came out, enthusiasts probably griped that Chevy had “ruined” the Corvette by offering a coupe for the first time. Little did they know the next year that controversial split window rear window treatment would be discontinued, and the one-year-only ’63 SWC would become highly desirable among collectors – and nearly everyone else, too.

Nowadays, the open-air adventure of the ’63 isn’t quite so favored.

The convertible – despite outselling the coupe 10,919 to 10,594 in that initial year of the C2 – isn’t worth nearly as much as the coupe these days. Just ask the owner of this ’63 two-top car who’s been trying to sell it for more than a month for $32,000 on Craigslist out of Stanton, California.

On paper, it looks like it might be an easy enough restoration, but a new owner will have to be careful not to get upside down in expenses because the reality is that convertibles aren’t worth as much as coupes.

One bright spot is that this Sting Ray is said to run and drive, but it would be a good idea to get more details about exactly what kind of engine is residing under the hood. While the paint would definitely have to be redone, the body appears to be in decent condition with no glaring damage.

The seller has also already purchased new tires and wheels, and we’re assuming based on the photos they are red-line tires and Rally wheels – neither of which weren’t available until ’67 if you’re shooting for a purely stock restoration.

We do like the look and the weather protection the hardtop provides, but it appears that a new soft top will have to be installed since the existing one is torn in at least a couple of places.

A lot of spare parts are included, too, but we’re not sure how much they’re worth. The door panels, for example, look to be in rough shape, so a call to Al Knoch would be necessary.

With only about 22,000 Corvettes built in ’63, saving any or all of them, no matter what they might need, is a project close to the heart of a true enthusiast. Whether that project dips too closely to the wallet of that enthusiast is another question.

  1. Would be nice to have more photo’s of the underneath the car , the frame and drivers and passenger kick panel area for rust. If it has any power features and what engine is in this car.
