Last month we featured some photos and a quick video of a Corvette Engineering team driving a number of 2026 Corvette ZR1Xs on the Tail of the Dragon. Now we have a new video just posted this week showing a guy following a couple of the ZR1Xs on the Dragon.
Most of the Corvettes were badged as ZR1s, so we purchased some high definition photos of the cars on the Dragon from KillBoy.com and found that there were six ZR1Xs in the group, along with a lone E-Ray that had some interesting characteristics about it.
It would make sense that the E-Ray is running with the ZR1X as both have the performance hybrid AWD powertrains. But the E-Ray’s rear coupe window has been covered so we are wondering if that was something else. And by something else we mean like a Grand Sport X?
The “rando” who captured the group this day was driving a Honda S2000 and we see him parked along a turn-off on the famous stretch of highway 129 along the North Carolina–Tennessee state line. The Corvette Team drives by and then a few seconds later, he pulls out to give chase.
The Tail of the Dragon has over 300 turns over the 11 or 12 miles stretch of road, and on this day it’s wet due to a pretty constant rain. That doesn’t seem to slow down our camera guy as he eventually is able to track down the engineers at around the 3:55 mark in the video.
It’s not the most exciting video in the world, but how often do you have the opportunity to drive behind a couple of 1250-hp Corvette ZR1Xs?

Random weekday passed these guys at the lake but they weren’t to talkative so limited info. Chevy engineers doing real world testing with the ZR1 (possibly ZR1X to I’m not sure) and what looks to be a new eray or stingray based on the engine bay being completely blocked off.

Yeah it wasn’t exactly the most exciting video to watch but for someone like me who’s never driven Tail of the Dragon it was at least fun to see what it’s like.
I have driven it a few times and honestly, it gets a bit much by the end. So many curves back and forth, back and forth. It gets a bit boring almost. You would be a fool to drive it really fast as there are always accidents on the road (last time we saw one happen). Not to mention that weird squirrel that ran out – just then. But yes, you have to do it at least once in your lifetime. It’s one of those kinds of things…
Curious how fast were you going? Looks to be a good clip. Like the video. Headed there in 26.
Thanks.
That Vette went over the double yellow way too many times. He needs a driving lesson.
