Well, this is… something. When Ford CEO Jim Farley congratulated the Corvette team on its success in Germany and added, “Game on,” this isn’t exactly the game we had in mind. The Blue Oval was back at the Nürburgring recently. But, instead of taking a third stab at the infamous 12.9-mile track with the roadgoing $325,000, 815-horse Mustang GTD that topped out at 6:52 and has acted as the primary foil for the ZR1 twins, it ferried the latest version of its storied “SuperVan” to Deutschland.
The non-production fast Transit serves as a promotional showcase of what Ford’s all-electric platforms can do. Now in the second part of its fourth generation, the aptly named SuperVan 4.2 sports three electric motors that combine for 1,400 horsepower – that’s down from 2,000 in the original SuperVan 4, but the .2 was built to optimize aero, weight, and the ability to use all its ponies efficiently. To those ends, the 4.2 was able to shed some 880 lbs. compared to its predecessor, and its scaffold-like rear wing setup can produce up to 4,400 lbs. of downforce. So, it’s a Transit van in name only; what you’re really looking at is some extremely serious hardware in a funny wrapper.
The SV4.2, piloted by ‘Ring pro Romain Dumas – who set the EV ‘Ring record in a VW ID.R in 2019 – was able to hold a charge and stop the clock in a frantic 6:48.393. That mark clips the 1,250-horse hybrid Corvette ZR1X’s 6:49.275 record by just shy of a second. While the X retains the American production car record, having one pulled over on it by a van, no matter how specialized, makes that victory feel a bit hollow, and could hopefully be the straw that pushes the team at Chevrolet to review its stubborn no pro drivers policy that could be costing its cars around 10-seconds per lap. For now, while we aren’t sure how seriously to take this run, but we have to take our hats off to Ford for at least keeping things interesting!

Good for them.
If they want to play that game using bespoke non-production cars, here is how GM settles it-
Send the Cadillac F1 car around the circuit once the GM powertrain is proven.
In the interim, send Josef Newgarden around it in one of the Chevy-powered IndyCars.
Game. Set. Match.

Mr. Farley is due congratulations. Very impressive. I think I would still rather have my ZR1x anyway (when I get it). I don’t think many people will walk up to me at my next car show and say beautiful truck. For now, I am very happy with my C8 Z06

Well, this is cool! BUT still doesn’t hold a “production” car record. You can take any specialized vehicle to try to get a lap record. I’m sure there are other cars out there that can do it. It was just Ford’s way to play a childish game in my opinion.

Nothing against the writer of this article, but this is not exciting at all. One-of-a-kind, fully-electric, van-looking thing, with race car aero doing fast lap times is hardly noteworthy. Start with a production chassis and build something crazy, but still fully road-legal, and set a fast time… then I will be interested.
Hot chicks love wierd vans??? That’s a new one on me!!! Makes you wonder how the Mustang GTD designers feel right now.
