Here’s a shark you won’t see on the Discovery Channel this week. This uber rare 1970 Corvette ZR1 convertible just popped up on Bring a Trailer looking for a new home. With the newest ZR1 dominating the interwebs these days, it’s only appropriate that we get a look at the first generation of Corvette’s King of the Hill.
RPO ZR1 first ran from 1970 to 1972. It featured the LT-1 engine, M22 4-speed manual transmission, upgraded brakes and suspension, radio delete, and more. A total of 53 ZR1’s were produced over the three-year run with roughly half of them still known to exist. There were 25 ZR1’s produced in 1970, just 8 in 1971, and 20 in 1972.
This C3 received a 5-year frame-off restoration that was completed in the early 1990s. After that it went on to earn a NCRS Top Flight award in 1992 and Bloomington Gold Certification in 2006. It’s finished in handsome Corvette Bronze over a Saddle vinyl interior. It features a white soft top and a body-colored hardtop. The matching numbers, 370hp LT-1 engine is mated to a M22 4-speed that sends power back to a 4.11 rearend. The odometer shows 46,520 miles.
Today the car still presents as new and the sale includes a partial tank sticker, the judging awards, restoration photos, and statements from previous owners.
We last saw this Stingray at Mecum Kissimmee 2025 where it changed hands at $148,500. Prior to that it sold at Mecum Indy in 2024 for $170,500. At the time of this writing, the car is already at $125,000 after just two bids. No doubt that number will grow substantially before the auction closes on Friday, August 1 at 1:12pm eastern.

WOW! This is the perfect Corvette, a convertible with great colors and such a nice engine and 4-speed. Somebody should buy this Corvette for a minimum of $200,000 and loan it to the Museum for a special ZR1 exhibit to educate all these young guys where the Heritage comes from for the new $200,000 plus Corvette ZR1 and ZR1x that they are about to purchase.
