Good news and bad news for the owner of the 2018 Corvette Grand Sport recently stolen from a Missouri neighborhood that was taken after a second theft attempt proved successful last month.

Missouri State Highway Patrol officers were able to track the Corvette, not through OnStar as you might suspect, but instead through an aftermarket tracking device that showed the car’s movement from its owner’s home in Waldo to a business in Independence.

“Now that we’ve located this vehicle, we can kind of retrace the vehicle’s steps, so to speak,” says Cpl. Justin Ewing of the Highway Patrol.

The car – with a black garbage bag covering the top of the passenger side door – was located inside a garage at Precision Touch Auto Sales off Highway 40, authorities said.

Troopers are still working with Kansas City Police to find the thieves and figure out how the car wound up at the business.

Police say in April, a neighbor scared away thieves as they tried to take the Blade Silver Grand Sport in Kansas City’s Waldo area.

The bad guys weren’t content to just leave empty-handed, though, and started firing bullets through the air, some of which hit nearby cars and houses.

The next week, the thieves apparently returned to the same neighborhood and were able to successfully steal the Corvette this time.

A woman who lives in a house that was struck multiple times by bullets during the first incident says fortunately no one was injured either time, but naturally she’s still upset.

“I bought this house eight and a half years ago and we’ve never had anything like this,” Marlene Standley told KMBC News in Kansas City. “The boldness that they’re doing now, they came back to the exact same place.”

In that second successful attempt, neighbor Megan Hogan says the thieves pointed guns at the home of the Corvette’s owner after the car alarm went off before they were able to race away in the GS.

“Something has to change,” said Hogan, who gave 911 a play-by-play of the theft as it was happening. She said it took about 15 minutes for police to arrive.

After authorities located the stolen Corvette, Cpl. Ewing told a reporter that “it’s our goal in public safety to make sure we protect lives and property.”

The investigation also led to a large drug seizure, police said, so they believe drug trafficking may be involved.

  1. WTF? They use excessive violence, multiple attempts, just to steal a C7 GS? What is wrong with these people. They need to be caught if they are that rabid. It sounds more like a scene from SWAT than some typical city street…
