NFL Draft in Green Bay Brings Opportunity to See the Bart Starr MVP 1967 Corvette

The years haven’t been so kind to this 1967 Goodwood Green Corvette convertible, but that deteriorating condition hasn’t diminished its appeal to the citizens of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

You see, this classic C2 Sting Ray traces its history back to February 3, 1967 when it was presented to legendary NFL quarterback Bart Starr for being chosen as the MVP of what became the first Super Bowl but was known back then as the NFL/AFL Championship.

Passing through several owners in the decades since, the car eventually wound up in the hands of a Connecticut couple in 2021, and they knew exactly what to do with it.

“Steve (Altieri) then decided, along with his wife, Joyce Lynn, that there was only one place this car belonged,” says Darrel Burnett of The Automobile Gallery & Event Center in downtown Green Bay. “It wasn’t Connecticut. It was Green Bay, Wisconsin.”

The couple wanted the car displayed on the showroom floor at The Automobile Gallery , where it can be enjoyed by Packers fans.

“This is more artifact than it is automobile,” Burnett pointed out. “Of course, the Bart Starr car is the star of the show.”

Burnett has a soft spot in his heart for the NFL legend since many years ago, he was a reporter who covered the Packers during Starr’s 1975-83 stint as head coach of the team.

The new home of the “Starr Car” is especially fitting this year as the 2025 NFL Draft will be coming to Titletown, a community development just west of Lambeau Field, from Thursday, April 24 through Saturday, April 26.

Burnett invites Packers fans from around the world to visit The Automobile Gallery and take a look at the vintage Corvette and other vehicles on display there, too.

“One of the proudest moments I have in my role is seeing people come in and literally stare at this car, and they’ll share stories, personal stories that they have of Bart, Cherry and the family,” Burnett said. “I think this is going to be a wonderful opportunity for this community, not just the franchise, but the entire community to show the NFL, and for that matter, the world, exactly what we’re made of.”

Those visitors will no doubt notice the deteriorating paint on the old Corvette, and when Starr’s wife Cherry was asked during her last trip to Green Bay as part of a poll on whether it should be restored, she answered yes, pointing out that her late husband would never have let it get in this condition.

No word yet on whether that restoration will take place soon. We’ll keep you posted as details become available.
