A father-son duo have combined to turn reality into fantasy thanks to a totaled 1980 Corvette.
Rob Gunter and his son decided to use the wrecked C3 to build an indoor racing simulator that seems much more realistic than most such machines.
Enough of the badly damaged Corvette remained between the A and B pillars to allow the transformation, thanks to their efforts in body repair, fabrication, and paint. They added a rear bumper to the shortened body, deleted a good portion of the passenger side to make the simulator more compact, and fabricated a frame to support the body and driver. A dark blue paint job was the final touch, at least for the body.
Next came the installation of a gaming PC behind the driver’s seat and a 49-inch curved monitor in front of the windshield.
That wasn’t all, though. They also rigged up the steering wheel, shifter, and pedals to control the in-game vehicle, and turning the key in the ignition switch powers up the system. They also made the brake lights functional and mounted speakers around the driver for an immersive experience, along with putting a temp gauge on the dash that’s linked to a sensor near the PC’s CPU.
If you’d like to tackle a similar project, the duo has posted a build log on Instructables to provide a helping hand – no sense reinventing the wheel, after all.
