Corvettes for Sale: Custom 1964 Corvette on eBay

Social etiquette says we shouldn’t criticize the looks of somebody else’s kid.

But in this case, we’ll leave it up to our readers to let us know exactly what they think about this customized 1964 Corvette vert-turned-coupe that’s being offered on eBay Motors for $55,000.

We spotted this creation on Barn Finds, where the reaction from the public has mostly been negative. One Negative Nancy even wrote: “It is amazing how many different ways people have found over the years to absolutely ruin a Corvette.”

On the other hand, someone on the Positive Patty side offered these words of encouragement: “Lot of naysayers here for what looks to be a well constructed custom. Back in the day, this was what you did to a theft recovery ‘Vette. IMHO, overall, the builder’s vision is a good one, proportions hang well. My personal tastes would be to restore the dashboard to something more factory-like and re-imagine the taillights and rear bumpers and drive it to all the C&C meets I could!”

The seller explains how the custom Sting Ray first came to be, noting that he purchased it from an insurance company in 1964 after a Corvette convertible had been stolen and stripped and suffered some body damage. A perfect fit for this guy at the time since his father owned a “very prestigious” auto body repair shop and he worked there.

Over the next five years, Son installed a lot of things, including a custom exhaust system with cutouts, high-performance 409 engine, aluminum four-speed transmission, and custom dashboard, upholstery, seats, and steering wheel.

He even converted the car from a convertible to a hardtop with a removable roof that stores behind the seats. Lest you think otherwise, the body isn’t from a kit as Son says he “completely custom built” it and now proudly proclaims “there are no other vehicles like this one.”

He retained all of the Corvette inner panels and door mechanisms and says that the steering, suspension, windshield, and drivetrain are all standard Corvette issue, with parts still readily available.

Built to be driven on the street and not as a show car, the owner admits he did enter it in several shows back in the day where his efforts were rewarded with first-place trophies. Unfortunately, because of work-related issues, he drove the car less than 300 miles before he parked it in a barn 40 miles north of Pittsburgh and hasn’t driven it in more than 50 years.

That lack of attention means the car requires a lot of work to hit the streets again. He says the body remains in excellent condition but has some paint chips. The tires, needless to say, are dry rotted and will need to be replaced, and the aluminum wheels are now pitted. The interior has suffered some inevitable damage from mice, and rubber items under the hood like radiator and brake hoses will need to be replaced, along with the battery and the driver door glass that is cracked.

Personally, we can live with the front view and are a big fan of the tilting one-piece hood, but the rear end looks like an Opel GT on crack. We forgot to tell you this car was offered before in 2019 when the asking price was $90,000. Despite recent inflation, the price has now come down to $55,000. So how much would you pay for this blast from the past?

  1. It’s a good thing there are no other vehicles like this one because this abomination looks like shit inside and out.

  2. Guy thought it was a mustang. Just needs to hang a big chrome muffler under the bumper and put the little doggy with the bobbing head in the back window.
