A lifetime of driving Corvettes began for this writer way back in 1983 with the purchase of a used, red-on-red 1980 from a Delta Airlines pilot who advertised it in the classifieds of The Atlanta Journal.
That’s why I have a soft spot for cars like this ’80 coupe being offered on Bring a Trailer by Corvette Mike.
The current bid is just $10,300, and with the auction coming to a close Friday mid-afternoon, it’ll be interesting to see if that figure climbs high enough to close a deal.
While some may argue that the late C3s aren’t worthy cars, we’d be inclined to respectfully disagree with that assessment. While the base model had an L48 engine that put out just 190 horsepower, there was an option for customers who remembered the glory days of the ’60s and early ’70s – the L82 that produced 230 horsepower but sadly was then discontinued by ’81.
Fortunately, this black beauty does have the more powerful engine, which appeared in just 5,069 cars out of a total production run of 40,614 for an additional cost of $595.
This one also has a beautiful two-tone Oyster leather and cloth interior, a great complement for the black exterior that features removable tape pinstripes in case you don’t like the accents.
The car is believed by Corvette Mike to be an original 35,000-mile classic, with a spokesman replying to a skeptic with this online post: “From what we see and know about the car, there isn’t any reason to believe that the 35K miles aren’t accurate. The interior is original and in beautiful condition. To us, that tends to tell the story more than the exterior, which is also in very nice shape.”
Features include updated front and rear bumpers in an integrated rear spoiler and revised fenders, a look we really loved in our own ’80, along with dual glass and black painted roof panels, power door locks, aluminum wheels, an updated JVC CD audio system, a new exhaust system, and Goodyear white letter radials.

Anyone who thinks late C3’s aren’t worthy is full of crap. This black L82 in particular is a very worthy car and it looks great.
The 1980 Corvette is one of the best of the C3 gen, last year for no computer controlled anything, with a lot of upgrades. We’ve traveled extensively in ours, read all about it.
