We’ve told you in the past about those shiny boats that are designed to look like floating C7 Corvettes.
Now one such watercraft has been involved in a crazy crash during the Merritt Island Christmas Boat Parade in Florida on Saturday night, leaving three people hospitalized.
Check out this wild video shared on Instagram by TheQualifiedCaptain that shows the captain of the Corvette boat smiling and his female passenger waving (or dancing) to onlookers just before he pulls off and begins fishtailing back and forth. Seconds later, he runs smack into the back of a small fishing boat occupied by a man and woman, sending the seated female passenger flying backwards into the air.
“Things went south REAL fast,” The Qualified Captain posted. “No need for this nonsense … especially at a highly trafficked boat parade.”
He offered this advice to the Corvette boat driver and others who might be tempted to do such foolishness, too: “When you’re running a boat (or whatever the hell that thing is) take pride in being the captain. Going above and beyond the safety mindset is a great look. It will build you a great reputation and ultimately make you a better captain. This guy here is not it.”
The Florida Fish and Conservation Commission confirmed that three people had to be hospitalized for injuries suffered in the crash, but Terry Thorn, a witness at the scene, told WESH “at least no one died from it.”
Another witness, Don Wilson, watched the crash unfold after the parade, saying: “It looks like he was getting dangerously close to other boats. There was lots of other boats, and surely, within seconds, he hit someone.”
“I hope that the guy who caused the accident learns a valuable lesson and today is a better boater than he was yesterday,” Wilson added.
Merritt Island Christmas Boat Parade officials were quick to condemn the carelessness of the Corvette boat driver, posting on Facebook: “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in last night’s accident. We don’t have any information on the driver of the boat as this vessel was not registered in this year’s parade and are trusting the situation is in good hands with local law enforcement. We do not condone this type of reckless activity and will work with local law enforcement to make sure this type of activity is immediately rectified in the future.”
They expressed a “thank you to the boaters who practiced safe boating and stuck to the route,” and said they “will continue working hard to ensure this tradition still remains a safe local favorite!”
