Chevy offered five versions of its behemoth 427 engine when the third generation Corvette debuted in 1968.

This example being offered for $44,500 on Craigslist out of the Hesperia, California area (northeast of Los Angeles) has the middle-of-the-road L68 tri-power version that pumped out 400 horsepower, with 1,932 sold at an extra cost of $305.50. Other versions were the 427/390 (7,717 sold for $200.15), the 427/435 L71 (2,898 sold for $437.10), the 427/430 L88 (80 sold for $947.90), and the legendary L89 that added aluminum heads to an L71 (624 sold for $805.75).

The seller says that his Stingray’s matching-numbers engine has recently undergone a rebuild, and it’s also received a new clutch for the original four-speed manual transmission, along with the installation of new bushings, ball joints, and power brake booster.

The result of all that mechanical work has resulted in a “nice driving Corvette,” he says.

No mention is made of the Safari Yellow paint, so we don’t know for sure if it is a repaint. Based on photographic evidence, however, it looks nice. Safari Yellow proved to be a fairly popular color in ’68 with 3,133 built out of a total production run of 28,566. The black canvas top adds a nice contrast to the yellow paint, though the driver’s side might show a small slit at the bottom in one of the photos.

Meanwhile, the nicely contrasting black interior shows well with no apparent splits in the seat covers, and the door panels and dash look to be in good condition, too.

Key features include a 336 heavy duty Positraction rear end, as well as power steering and power disc brakes.

Are you ready to dance on back to the psychedelic era and get your groove on in this high-powered Stingray?

  1. With a 3.36 rear, the trans is probably a M21 seeing as the clutch was replaced. A M20 would do everything better. Nice car, always liked that light yellow (with different names for different years and models) that was popular in the 60s.
