[ACCIDENT] After Rear-Ending a Pickup Truck, This C5 Corvette Driver Thinks About Making a Run for It

The difference between an accident and a near-miss is often just a matter of inches.

The difference between making the right decision or not is often just a matter of seconds.

That certainly seems to be the case with this 2001 Corvette convertible that was involved in a wild hit-and-run accident Sunday, Nov. 10 around 12:42 p.m.

And it was all captured on a video that has gone viral.

In the first segment, shot from the rear-facing camera, we see the tonneau cover of a pickup truck traveling about 60 mph when a black dot can be seen suddenly and rapidly closing in on the truck.

The object turns out to be a black 2001 Corvette convertible being driven by a 60+-year-old man at about 80 or 90 mph on a two-lane country road, on a sunny day with dry road conditions.

That man is the only one who knows what he was doing before the accident, but despite his recklessness, he nearly was able to swerve and miss the pickup at the last second. Unfortunately, the key word was “nearly” as the ‘Vette does clip the left rear end of the truck, sending pieces of the Chevy flying onto the road.

The front-facing camera then captures the rest of the action, with the C5 seen taking a bumpy little jaunt off the left side of the road, still at a pretty high rate of speed before he’s finally able to get the car back on the road and come to a momentary stop on the shoulder, fortunate that earlier there were no culverts or utility poles in his path.

At that point, we hear the pickup driver telling a female occupant of the truck the license plate number of the Corvette. We’re surprised the truck driver didn’t pull in front of the ‘Vette to block his path, but during all the excitement, he probably just didn’t have time to react that way. After a few seconds, though, the ‘Vette apparently decides to make a break for it again and pulls onto the road and takes off.

We don’t see the final outcome on the 70-second clip posted on reddit, but apparently the Corvette driver eventually did stop again though “he admitted he was going to take off but noticed I wasn’t going to let him get away,” the driver of the truck posted. “He then told me to take a photo of his driver’s license because he was going to leave before the police arrived. I managed to persuade him to stay.”
